Description
Hector Doyle is a British national and one of the five death row inmates who escape from prisons around the world to converge on Tokyo. Standing 185 centimeters tall and weighing 85 kilograms, he is a muscular man with red hair who was destined to die in the electric chair but survived the execution. His escape, driven by the singular thought of wanting to know defeat, involved overpowering armed guards while still blindfolded from the execution process. Little is known of his past beyond his profession as an assassin, which is presumed to be the reason for his death sentence.
Among the group of escaped convicts, Doyle is distinguished as the most humane and the one who possesses a surprising amount of common sense. Unlike his fellow escapees who kill civilians indiscriminately, Doyle shows restraint. He pays for his purchases at a convenience store, only knocks a teacher unconscious rather than killing him, and expresses reluctance to fight in a crowded shopping mall out of concern for bystanders. After being treated for injuries, he even offers a polite expression of gratitude and apology before proceeding with his violent objectives. This behavior creates a contrast with his brutal methods, as he is a dedicated user of hidden weapons, explosives, and dirty tactics, seeing no issue with deploying a bomb or a blade in a fight. Doyle views combat pragmatically, believing that if a weapon ensures victory, its use is entirely justified.
His core motivation for coming to Japan is to find a worthy opponent who can finally grant him the sensation of defeat, something he has never experienced. This quest leads him into conflict with nearly every major fighter from the underground arena in a series of encounters. He first confronts Baki Hanma at school, is later attacked by Kosho Shinogi, and disguises himself as a policewoman to test Biscuit Oliva, only to be easily thrown aside. His most significant battles form the arc of his story. He fights Retsu Kaioh in a bar, where Retsu, enraged by Doyle's dismissal of martial artists as being too soft to use weapons, overwhelms him with a barrage of Chinese weaponry. The relationship between the two takes an unexpected turn when Doyle, despite having been beaten nearly to death, protects the unconscious Retsu from being attacked by thugs through the night. Retsu later repays this by carrying Doyle to the Shinshinkai dojo to have his wounds treated.
This act of mercy sets the stage for Doyles personal development. Upon recovering at the dojo, Doyle immediately attacks again, this time targeting Katsumi Orochi and his students with a dust explosion that leaves everyone with severe burns. However, after being provoked by Doppo Orochi, he discards his weapons and explosives to fight with his bare hands, only to be swiftly defeated by Doppos karate. He is brought back to the dojo once more, where he engages in a grueling series of bare-handed matches against Katsumi. Each time he is knocked unconscious, he wakes and fights again, refusing to admit defeat. This process only ends when Katsumi breaks down, unable to continue destroying someone who will not stay down, and declares Doyle the victor out of pity. It is at this moment that Doyle finally understands defeat. He walks to Katsumi, removes his jacket, and places it at the younger fighter`s feet in a formal admission of loss. This act brings him a feeling of unexpected joy and freedom. Following this, Doyle asks Katsumi to teach him karate, and the two form an unlikely friendship, with Doyle leaving for the Middle East armed with a black belt given to him as a parting gift.
Doyle`s journey, however, does not end peacefully. On the ship leaving Japan, he is ambushed by fellow escapee Ryukou Yanagi, who blinds him with a venomous attack and throws him into the sea. Though he survives, he loses his eyesight. Captured and sent to a special prison, Doyle adapts to his blindness. He later ruptures his own eardrums to heighten his sense of touch to an extraordinary degree, allowing him to perceive the world through vibrations. This adaptation marks a new and dangerous phase of his existence, showing that even with his new humility, his will to fight and survive remains absolute.
As a fighter, Doyles abilities are a combination of physical conditioning and surgical modification. His body is implanted with metal blades in his joints, wrists, knees, and heels, which are controlled by a spring system connected to his nervous system. He possesses a generator in his heart that boosts his strength and can fire his arm forward with tremendous force using a trigger mechanism in his ring finger. This attack causes devastating, almost imploding damage to a targets face. His most notable weapon is a bomb strapped to his chest that can be detonated on contact, and he is also skilled at creating improvised explosives, such as using a bag of flour and gunpowder to destroy a dojo. His durability is immense, having survived the electric chair, massive blood loss from Retsu`s attacks, and repeated beatings from top-tier martial artists.
