Description
In the 2015 animated series Transformers: Robots in Disguise, Grimlock is a Dinobot who begins his journey as a former Decepticon prisoner before becoming a valued member of Bumblebee's team. His past is marked by incarceration aboard the prison ship Alchemor, where he was held for causing severe property damage. After the ship crash-landed on Earth, his stasis cell was damaged, allowing him to break free and eventually assist Bumblebee, Strongarm, and Sideswipe in capturing the Decepticon criminal Underbite. This act of heroism led to him being placed on probation and, following an incident where he was briefly controlled by a small Decepticon named Minitron, he had his Decepticon insignia officially replaced with an Autobot symbol, formally joining the team.
Grimlock possesses a personality that balances jovial and friendly traits with an overwhelming enthusiasm for violence and destruction. He is characterized as a bot of action who has little patience for complicated strategies, preferring to think on the fly, with his usual plan beginning and ending with a desire to punch his problems into oblivion. Despite his aggressive tendencies and ease with which he becomes angered, Grimlock is genuinely good-hearted and helpful, making it clear that he is not a bad guy. His preferred method of attack involves charging directly at enemies and using his immense strength, often causing significant collateral damage in the process. He is not depicted as a particularly skilled or subtle fighter, eschewing guns and blasters in favor of his own fists, but his sheer force as a heavy-hitting Dinobot proves effective in most situations. His impulsiveness and somewhat childlike behavior can occasionally land him in trouble when he overestimates his abilities, but his toughness and tenacity usually allow him to fight his way out again. He also developed an unusual phobia since coming to Earth: a mortal dread of kittens.
Within the story, Grimlock serves as the powerhouse of Bumblebee's team, often called upon when raw strength is required to subdue escaped Decepticon inmates. His primary motivation is the simple pleasure of smashing bad guys and showing off his fighting skills, and he is consistently excited at the prospect of confronting the criminals he was once imprisoned alongside. His key relationships include a strong friendship with Sideswipe, who remained his biggest supporter and showed great loyalty during a time when Grimlock was suspected of betrayal. He shares a professional alliance with Bumblebee, who recognizes the advantages of having a robotic dinosaur on the team, as well as with other members like Strongarm and Fixit. He counts Steeljaw and his pack among his primary enemies, and considers Simacore to be his archenemy. Grimlock also has a notable history with Scowl, a fellow Dinobot who was once a friend but later became an enemy due to Scowl's willingness to harm innocent lives, a line Grimlock himself tries to avoid crossing.
Throughout the series, Grimlock undergoes development primarily in his social standing and moral understanding. Although his core personality remains consistent, his transition from a branded criminal incarcerated for property damage to a trusted Autobot is central to his arc. He demonstrates a capacity for learning, recognizing that his hobby of smashing things is not always acceptable, especially when it violates rules or endangers innocent people. While he may not be the brightest or most coordinated member of the team, his good-natured loyalty and eagerness to be a team player make him an appealing and dependable, if somewhat unpredictable, ally. His past as a prisoner provides a unique perspective, and he has shown the ability to understand and question the biases that might have led to his incarceration.
In terms of abilities, Grimlock transforms into a powerful and stocky robotic Tyrannosaurus rex, a form that functions as a wrecking ball on two legs and is far from subtle. In this mode, his small arms are noticeably larger than typical depictions, ending in wide paws, and his massive jaws can open and close with crushing force. In robot mode, his design includes a unique feature where his dino-mode arms can flip forward from his back, effectively giving him four arms. He relies entirely on melee combat, using his fists to deliver heavy-hitting punches, and his sheer physical power is his greatest asset in battle.
