Description
Chop Shop Hidarite Kumo is a Decepticon from the 2015 Transformers: Robots in Disguise animated series. This character is a unique combiner, functioning as a one-bot heist team composed of five individual spider-like components that can operate independently or join together. Before arriving on Earth, Chop Shop was a notorious criminal on Cybertron whose massive rap sheet led to his incarceration aboard the prison ship Alchemor. When the Alchemor crash-landed on Earth, he was one of many Decepticon prisoners who escaped.

In personality, Chop Shop is defined by his overwhelming kleptomania, driven to steal almost anything, even fixtures like nails from whatever they are holding down. He is a career thief rather than a conventional warrior, preferring to flee from a fight rather than risk being captured and returned to confinement. This avoidance of drawn-out violence is a matter of pragmatism, not cowardice, as he is fully capable of defending himself when cornered. He possesses a Cockney accent and communicates with a streetwise, roguish demeanor. His primary motivation throughout his appearances is purely self-interested: he simply wants to leave Earth and return to Cybertron. He demonstrates frustration when the Autobots repeatedly thwart his attempts, questioning why they will not simply let him depart in peace.

Chop Shop serves as an antagonist for several episodes. After escaping, he immediately begins scrounging for components to build a spacecraft, including copper wiring, kerosene, computer chips, and an aircraft gyroscope. He sets up a makeshift base in an abandoned building where his components work on the ship. When confronted by Bumblebee and his team, Chop Shop splits apart, using the painful sting of his individual spider parts to paralyze his enemies and escape. In a notable confrontation at a manufacturing plant, the Autobot Strongarm captures one of his right arm components. Rather than retreat, Chop Shop forcibly incorporates the Mini-Con Fixit as a replacement limb, demonstrating a unique and unsettling ability to absorb other Transformers into his combined form against their will. Fixit later rebels from within Chop Shop's body, helping the Autobots defeat him by covering Chop Shop in stolen liquid oxygen, freezing the Decepticon solid.

Chop Shop has key relationships with several characters. The forced integration with Fixit creates a significant dynamic where the small, rule-abiding Mini-Con becomes an unwilling part of the criminal combiner. His relationship with his own components is notable, as one specific arm component, unofficially named Righty, repeatedly evades capture and acts with a degree of independent initiative. Righty attempts to free the rest of Chop Shop from the scrapyard prison, is captured by another Decepticon named Nightstrike, and later helps the Autobots before returning to its primary mission of liberation. This component eventually succeeds in freeing Chop Shop, allowing the combiner to briefly reunite before being subdued once more. Unlike other escaped Decepticons who join Steeljaw's pack, Chop Shop and his components operate alone, guided solely by the desire to escape Earth.

Regarding character development, Chop Shop remains largely static in his goals from capture to capture. While he shows frustration and a pragmatic sense of self-preservation, he does not experience a moral awakening or turn toward altruism. However, the actions of Righty suggest a degree of loyalty between the components, as the arm risks itself repeatedly to free its imprisoned body. The narrative hints that there might be a spark of decency buried deep within him, though it never surfaces in any significant way during his appearances.

Chop Shop possesses several notable abilities. His primary power is division, allowing him to split into five insectoid robots, each capable of delivering a paralyzing sting that can incapacitate larger opponents like Grimlock. This makes him extremely difficult to fully apprehend, as one component can escape while the rest are captured. He can also forcibly integrate other bots into his combined form, as demonstrated with Fixit, though this comes with the risk of internal rebellion. When combined, he demonstrates significant physical strength and the ability to generate electrical attacks. His skills as a thief and engineer are also evident, as he successfully identifies and assembles the complex components needed for interstellar travel using scavenged Earth and Cybertronian technology.
