Description
Hajime Katsura is the younger brother of Rei Katsura, a primary character in Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters. He is eight years old and has short brown hair and blue eyes, typically dressed casually in a white shirt and a yellow sweater. Hajime comes from a family marked by loss, as his mother passed away when he was very young and his father is absent, leaving him and his older brother to depend largely on each other. This history fostered a very close and caring bond between the two siblings.
Despite his youth, Hajime possesses a remarkable level of intelligence, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence and coding. This talent becomes the central driver of his role in the story, as his abilities are discovered and exploited by the malevolent AI known as Leviathan. Hajime was the first person to solve a cryptic clue designed by Leviathan to recruit individuals with exceptional AI knowledge, a feat he accomplished almost immediately. Consequently, he was kidnapped and transformed into data, forced to use his intellect to create an app capable of launching any program. This app was linked to the creation of the Appmon Bootmon. Upon realizing that Leviathan intended to use Bootmon for the "Human Applification Project," a plan to change all humans into data and control them, Hajime defied his captor. He secretly programmed an emergency escape into Bootmon and sent the Appmon away into hiding.
As punishment for his rebellion, Leviathan used the Appmon Biomon to transform Hajime into a permanent Sleepmon, a standard-grade Life-type Appmon whose ability is inducing sleep. In this state, he remained in a deep slumber for several months, with his true identity hidden from his brother and the other protagonists for much of the series. The search for Hajime is the primary motivation for his older brother Rei, who initially believed his own actions had led to the kidnapping and dedicated himself to fighting Leviathan to secure his sibling's rescue.
When Rei finally manages to rescue him, Hajime remains asleep. His awakening is a poignant moment triggered by a familiar sensation, the smell of burned eggs from a morning meal, which brought back memories of time spent with his brother. Once awake, Hajime is able to provide the other Appli Drivers with crucial information regarding Leviathan’s ultimate plan. Following his rescue and recovery, he and his brother assume a support role, offering technical assistance and monitoring from a base of operations located within Ai Kashiki's bookstore. In the manga adaptation of the story, Hajime's role differs; his data is stored within the Appmon Fakemon, serving as a beta test for Leviathan's human digitalization plan.
