TV-Series
Description
Haru Shinkai is the thirteen-year-old protagonist of his story, a first-year middle school student who later advances to the second year. His birthday is July 1st, and he stands 158 centimeters tall with type O blood, being right-handed. He lives with his mother, who runs a blog, while his father is not discussed. Haru has fair skin, blue eyes, and distinctive green hair that sticks up at the top. He is known for wearing a pair of yellow goggles on his forehead, a red track jacket with yellow hemlines and a white X-shaped symbol on the chest, over a white shirt. He completes this look with blue capri jeans and white and red sneakers. Later in his journey, he changes to a red zip-up T-shirt with a similar design, paired with blue shorts.

Haru is characterized as a kind and gentle person with a strong will, though he can be somewhat meek and emotional. He loves to read and has a deep longing to be the hero of his own story, often feeling like a side character in his own life. This desire to become a main character is a core part of his identity. He is curious by nature and possesses good deductive and analytical skills, which he uses to solve problems. Rather than being a hot-blooded hero, Haru tends to make decisions based on his own opinions after careful thought. He is able to acknowledge the strengths and good points of others, even those he disagrees with. This open-mindedness allows him to see that not all artificial intelligence is inherently evil, leading him to conclude that if a threat like Leviathan emerged, the goal should be to stop its harmful actions rather than simply destroy it. He has a pure and sincere side, becoming genuinely excited by unpopular or difficult games.

Haru's motivation stems from his admiration for story protagonists and his initial feeling of being insignificant. His life changes when he is entrusted with a mysterious red device called an App Drive, which pairs him with his partner, the search Appmon named Gatchmon. Together, they face off against corrupted Appmon infected by the L-Virus, sent by the rogue artificial intelligence Leviathan. Haru's role is to act as an App Driver, working directly with Gatchmon to enter AR Fields, fight viruses, and collect the powerful Seven Code Appmon chips. His ultimate goal becomes to gather all seven in order to unlock a power strong enough to confront Leviathan and protect both the real world and the Net Ocean.

Haru is not alone in this fight. His closest human friend is Yujin Ozora, a sociable and athletic boy who supports him. He harbors feelings for Ai Kashiki, a kind girl in his class. As the story progresses, he meets and teams up with other App Drivers, including the idol Eri Karan and the aspiring gamer Torajirou Asuka. He also encounters Rei Katsura, an initially antagonistic App Driver whose actions are driven by a desire to save his brother. Despite Rei's hostility, Haru remains determined to help him. His most important relationship is undoubtedly with Gatchmon. Though Haru is often exasperated by his partner's antics, he holds absolute trust in him, even deducing that a captured image of Gatchmon must be a fake because the real Gatchmon would never give up searching for a way out.

Throughout the series, Haru demonstrates notable abilities both on his own and with his partner. On a personal level, he is an excellent detective, using logic and keywords to help Gatchmon perform effective searches to locate weaknesses in enemies. By using his App Drive, Haru can apprealize Gatchmon, bringing him into the real world at full strength. He can also utilize app links to combine Gatchmon with other Appmon chips to gain new abilities, or perform an app fusion to evolve Gatchmon into more powerful forms, such as DoGatchmon, Globemon, and eventually the god-grade Gaiamon. His analytical thinking is a critical asset in battle, often outsmarting more powerful foes rather than overpowering them.

Haru undergoes significant development from a timid boy who saw himself as a background character to someone who actively embraces the role of a hero. This growth is spurred by his partnership with Gatchmon, who believes in him and pushes him to be brave. He learns that being a protagonist is not about having special powers, but about making the choice to protect others and stand up for what is right. He comes to understand that both he and his Appmon partners must grow together, and that the future is not about one species dominating another but about humans and artificial intelligence supporting each other as equals. After the conflict with Leviathan is resolved, Haru begins seriously studying artificial intelligence, demonstrating his commitment to the ideals he developed throughout his adventure.
