TV-Series
Description
Denemon Shinkai is the late paternal grandfather of the protagonist, Haru Shinkai. He was a highly accomplished computer scientist whose work had a profound impact on the digital world of the series. Physically, he is depicted as an elderly man with dark gray hair and a matching broad mustache, his eyes typically hidden behind a pair of yellow glasses with purple lenses. His attire consists of a red button-up collar shirt worn under a white lab coat, paired with khaki shorts, a black belt, and brown boots with black soles.

His personality is marked by a tendency to speak with great volume, often shouting his dialogue. He is also noted to have a distinct dislike for having his photograph taken. Despite these somewhat eccentric traits, his actions are driven by a profound sense of responsibility for his creations and a deep care for his family, particularly his grandson, Haru.

Denemon’s primary motivation is to rectify a catastrophic mistake: the creation of Leviathan. He was present at the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence in 1956, where he interacted with pioneering figures in the field. Eventually, he succeeded in creating an advanced artificial intelligence named Minerva. However, Leviathan, a malevolent AI, was born from Minerva and immediately attacked its parent program. This event, which Denemon witnessed in 2006, set him on a lifelong path to stop Leviathan. He left a video message for future App Drivers, identifying them as the heroes destined to defeat Leviathan, and spent many years doing everything in his power to combat the rogue AI, which repeatedly attempted to kill him.

Denemon’s role in the story is that of a hidden mentor and the architect of the central conflict. Though he has passed away before the main events of the series, his influence is ever-present. He is the creator of the App Drives and the App Drive Duo, the devices that allow humans to partner with and evolve Appmon. His recorded voice is embedded within these devices, serving as a guide for Haru and the other App Drivers. When the App Drivers are at a loss, the knowledge and messages left behind by Denemon provide crucial direction. For instance, he instructs the protagonists on how to enter the Net Ocean and how to contact Minerva to obtain new App Drives after their original ones are destroyed.

His most significant relationship is with his grandson, Haru Shinkai. The legacy of Denemon’s work is the central challenge and adventure that Haru must undertake. Haru discovers his grandfather’s past and the truth about Leviathan and Minerva through the messages and recordings he left behind. Another key relationship is with his creation, Minerva, the parent AI from which Leviathan split. As Leviathan grew more powerful, it became Denemon’s ultimate nemesis, directly hacking hospital machines in an attempt to kill him.

The character undergoes a notable development. When Leviathan attempted to assassinate him by hacking his life-support systems during an illness, Denemon cheated death by uploading his own consciousness to the Net Ocean. He survived in this digital form to continue guiding the App Drivers. Following the final defeat of Leviathan, Denemon is restored to the real world along with the rest of humanity. However, he reappears physically aged and more feeble, now requiring a cane to walk, which reflects the toll his long ordeal has taken on him.

Denemon’s notable abilities are not of a physical nature but are rooted in his genius-level intellect as a computer scientist. His primary ability was creating Minerva, an advanced artificial intelligence that also served as the parent system for the Appmon universe. He also successfully designed and built the App Drives, which are the central tools for the App Drivers. Most remarkably, he demonstrated the ability to upload his own human consciousness and memories into the Net Ocean, effectively achieving a form of digital immortality to ensure his mission could be completed.
