Description
Offmon is an Appmon who appears in Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters as the partner Appmon of the Applidriver Oozora Yujin. He is an Offline Game Appmon, and his name refers to both the off switch and offline gaming. His appearance reflects his theme: he is canine-like, wears a long coat several sizes too large for him, a hat, and goggles, and has a darker color palette compared to his counterpart Onmon. Like most Appmon, he has cables on his back that allow him to perform Applink.
His defining ability is to drain the motivation of a target completely, as if turning off a switch, reducing their will to zero in an instant. Perhaps because of this power, he is also described as being always listless. Using the power of the Offline Game app, he can disable the functions of apps around him, and in battle he is able to nullify an opponent's special abilities. His notable attacks include Switch Lazy, which involves charging up an energy orb before firing it at an opponent, and a technique known as Tachikiru Link. His evolved forms include Shutmon, described as his Ultimate form, and Rebootmon, his God form.
In terms of personality, Offmon is extremely shy, timid, and insecure. He constantly apologizes for everything, is afraid of others, and prefers to be alone. Because he was born through an offline game, he originally never had the opportunity to meet or befriend other Appmon. He strongly wishes to do his best for Yujin, but he also carries a darker side within him, and much of his isolation comes from his fear that he might harm someone if he evolves into Shutmon.
Offmon first appears when Yujin obtains an Appli Drive DUO and is assigned Offmon as his Buddy Appmon. Yujin and Offmon go to help Haru and his friends, who have been caught in a trap set by Sateramon and Tubumon. Offmon nullifies Sateramon's abilities and defeats Tubumon, after which he and Yujin are brought to the group's secret base and become part of the team. Despite the others trying to befriend him, Offmon trusts no one and keeps his distance. During a group vacation, he wanders off out of fear that he poses a danger to everyone, and Sateramon takes the opportunity to attack him. With the other Appmon exhausted from a battle against Tripmon, Offmon realizes he is the only one who can protect everyone and evolves into Shutmon, driving Sateramon away. However, he loses control of the form and even injures Yujin before Yujin manages to bring him back to his senses.
Deeply upset by hurting his partner, Offmon locks himself inside a box and runs away at the first opportunity. When Sateramon attacks him again, Yujin follows and shows his trust in him. Moved by that trust, Offmon evolves into Shutmon once more and finally manages to control his power. With an Applink between Shutmon and Globemon, they defeat Sateramon for good.
Later in the story, Yujin and Offmon sacrifice themselves to save their friends from the Ultimate 4 and are taken prisoner. Leviathan forbids their execution, and Cloud decides to use them as bait to lure the others into a trap, but they are ultimately rescued. They then take part in the mission to rescue Hajime and learn about Leviathan's plan to convert humanity into applications using Bootmon. When Bootmon is cornered, Yujin orders a reluctant Shutmon to attack him, reverting him to an Appmon Chip. Yujin then reveals that he is actually an android created by Leviathan. Although shocked by this revelation, Shutmon chooses to remain by Yujin's side. Yujin evolves him into Rebootmon and orders him to begin the process of materializing Leviathan. Rebootmon is eventually forced to battle Gaiamon until both are absorbed by Leviathan. Inside Leviathan, Offmon joins forces with Gatchmon, Dokamon, Musimon, and Hackmon in an effort to escape. During the final battle, Leviathan is defeated but survives by transferring itself into Yujin's body and retreating to the Dark Web. When Haru convinces Leviathan to abandon its plans, this causes Yujin to deactivate. With the threat gone and life returning to normal, Haru decides to take care of Offmon.
His central relationships include his devoted bond with Yujin, his repeated conflict with Sateramon, and his gradual acceptance into the group of Appmon partners. His development across the story is marked by his movement from fearful self-isolation to loyalty and self-control, culminating in his willingness to fight alongside his friends and to stay by Yujin even after learning the truth about his nature.
