TV-Series
Description
Endo is a male student who is regularly seen in the school library alongside the other main characters. Notably, he is the only male in the central group of four and initially appears to share co-protagonist status with the series' lead, Sawako Machida.
His personality is marked by a quiet and somewhat reserved demeanor, as he typically visits the library with the intention of reading in peace. Beyond this, he possesses a particular hipster sensibility when it comes to his literary tastes. Unlike those who follow current trends, Endo deliberately seeks out and reads old, outdated, or out-of-print books. He has a specific interest in reading old popular reads from a bygone era, often coming to the conclusion that they are not as impressive as their reputation might suggest.
In the story, Endo's role is primarily that of a passive observer or a straight-faced boy within the lively group. The narrative focus is predominantly on the comedic and passionate literary debates between Sawako and Shiori Kanbayashi. As a result, Endo, along with classmate Sumika Hasegawa, sees a significant reduction in screen time and importance as the series progresses. They become background figures, ultimately fading from the central action as the show concentrates almost exclusively on the evolving friendship between the two female leads.
Regarding his key relationships, he is the object of affection for Sumika Hasegawa, who is the book commissioner and a mystery novel fanatic. Her interest in him is a notable part of her character. He is also acquaintances with Sawako and Shiori, though his reserved nature means he does not actively drive the story's conflicts or conversations.
In terms of development, Endo undergoes very little change. His presence in the narrative is largely static, and he has no significant arc or personal growth throughout the series. His character is mainly established through his actions in the early episodes and then largely left behind. He does not possess any notable abilities, as the series is a comedic slice-of-life set in a mundane high school environment, and his primary activity is simply reading.
