Description
Howard Phillips Lovecraft is a member of the Guild, a secret society of ability users from North America. He superficially appears as a tall and gaunt man with very emaciated features, long blue hair that reaches past his hips, and dull, blank, dark gray eyes. His manner is consistently tired and gloomy, and he carries an air of deep mystery. He seems to dislike his work with the Guild and often appears reluctant or disinterested in the tasks assigned to him. He is known to enjoy tribute, sleeping, chocolate, and ice cream, and he dislikes fishing boats. Lovecraft typically acts alongside fellow Guild member John Steinbeck, carrying out orders from the Guild leader. During the conflict between the Guild, the Armed Detective Agency, and the Port Mafia, Lovecraft becomes a formidable opponent. His ability is called the Great Old Ones, which allows him to transform part or all of his body into a monstrous form covered in tentacles. In this transformed state, he is nearly indestructible and is only vulnerable from within. Even after being destroyed from the inside during a coordinated attack by Chuuya Nakahara and Osamu Dazai, he eventually regenerates completely. It is later revealed that the Great Old Ones is not a conventional ability, as Dazai's power, which normally nullifies other abilities, has no effect on it. Lovecraft undergoes little personal development over the course of the story, remaining a largely enigmatic and unchanging figure. His role is that of a nearly unstoppable force deployed by the Guild, and his presence creates a significant threat to the other organizations in Yokohama.
