Description
John Steinbeck is a young man of 21 years with a lean build, standing at 175 cm tall and weighing 64 kg. He has short blonde hair, blue eyes, and is frequently seen wearing a flat cap, a white shirt with sleeves rolled up, blue overalls held by a black belt, and dark boots. A raw potato and a pocket knife are items he typically carries with him.

His background is rooted in a simple, rural life as a farmer in North America, where he came from a large but impoverished family. The driving force behind his actions is not ambition or ideology, but the deep-seated need to support his loved ones. His strong familial loyalty, particularly toward a younger sister, motivated him to join the Guild for its lucrative pay, despite his personal reservations about wealth and the organization's leader.

In terms of personality, Steinbeck projects an image of a relaxed and easygoing individual, often seen chatting casually with his partner. However, this laid-back demeanor belies a ruthless and cunning operative. While he harbors a genuine hatred for chores and seems to avoid unnecessary work, he is far from lazy and is fully capable of carrying out dangerous missions. He shows no regard for his enemies and is willing to commit brutal acts to fulfill his objectives, yet he is not portrayed as a villain driven by malice; rather, his harsh actions are a direct consequence of his determination to provide for his family. He holds a profound distrust for those who wield money to control others, which puts him in direct ideological opposition to his former boss, Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, viewing him as an exploitative capitalist.

Within the story of Bungo Stray Dogs, Steinbeck serves as a key member of the North American organization known as the Guild. He makes his first significant appearance during the conflict between the Armed Detective Agency and the Port Mafia, where he and his partner, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, intervene and incapacitate both sides. Later, he is tasked with capturing two secretaries of the Armed Detective Agency as bait, a mission that leads to a prolonged battle with Doppo Kunikida and Jun'ichirō Tanizaki. After being briefly arrested and subsequently released, he is involved in the Yokohama Incineration Operation, a devastating plan that combines his ability with that of another captive ability user named Kyūsaku Yumeno (Q) to spread chaos across the city.

The most significant relationship in his life is with his family, who serve as his sole motivation. Professionally, his most notable connection is with his partner, Lovecraft, a mysterious and powerful individual whom Steinbeck considers one of his few friends. His relationship with Fitzgerald is complex and evolves throughout the series. Initially, he works for Fitzgerald out of financial necessity while harboring a deep personal dislike for him. However, after witnessing Fitzgerald’s complete financial ruin and seeing that his former boss was willing to go to such extremes for his own family, Steinbeck experiences a shift in perspective.

Following the Guild's decisive defeat and the apparent death of Fitzgerald, Steinbeck undergoes significant development. He chooses to stay in Yokohama to reorganize the surviving Guild members, taking on the role of their interim leader. He explains that while he hates Fitzgerald, his reasons for staying are pragmatic, driven by the need to continue saving his own family. This development culminates when Fitzgerald resurfaces, appearing unchanged with ambitions to rebuild. This leads to a final ideological break, and Steinbeck, disappointed and resolute, decides to become an open adversary, planning to crush the ambitions of his former leader.

John Steinbeck’s notable ability is named "The Grapes of Wrath," after the famous novel by his real-world counterpart. This power allows him to cultivate and control grapevines. By planting seeds into his own bloodstream, he can cause vines to grow rapidly from his body. These vines possess tremendous strength, enabling him to capture and restrain enemies, shield himself from attacks, and even connect to surrounding flora to vastly expand his range of control. A more insidious application of this ability is sensory sharing; by connecting his vines to another person or to plants, he can transmit sensations. In the Yokohama Incineration Operation, he maliciously linked the pain felt by the city's trees to Q, using their cursed ability to afflict anyone who harmed a plant. He typically uses a pocket knife to cut himself to activate this ability.
