Description
Michizō Tachihara is a character from Bungo Stray Dogs who initially appears as a brash and aggressive member of the Port Mafia, serving as a lieutenant in the Black Lizard assault unit. His most recognizable physical trait is the bandage he wears across the bridge of his nose, which he uses as a psychological switch to separate his dual identities. When acting as a mafioso, he keeps the bandage on; when operating as a member of the Hunting Dogs, he removes it.
Tachihara is revealed to be the fifth and previously unknown member of the Hunting Dogs, an elite special operations unit of the military police. He was assigned as a long-term undercover operative to infiltrate the Port Mafia and monitor its leader, Mori Ōgai. His position as a double agent places him in a constant struggle between his duty as a government agent and the genuine bonds he forms with his Port Mafia comrades, particularly his superior Hirotsu Ryūrō and his colleague Gin.
His motivation is deeply tied to the death of his older brother, a soldier who died years earlier on the battlefield. Tachihara blames Yōsano Akiko, the Armed Detective Agency's physician, for his brother's death, believing that her healing ability prolonged his brother's suffering and forced him to fight until he could no longer endure. This resentment drives him to volunteer for the infiltration mission, intending to eventually exact revenge. However, when given the opportunity to kill Yōsano, he finds himself unable to pull the trigger, revealing that his hatred was not as absolute as he believed.
Tachihara possesses the ability called Midwinter Memento, which allows him to manipulate metal objects through ferrokinesis. He primarily uses this power to control his blade and his dual handguns, making him a highly versatile combatant capable of ranged attacks and precise control over metallic objects in his environment.
His role in the story deepens during the conflict with the Decay of the Angel, when the Armed Detective Agency is framed for terrorism. As a member of the Hunting Dogs, Tachihara is initially compelled by the influence of the One Order—a page that rewrites reality—to believe the Agency is guilty. However, because he also identifies as a member of the Port Mafia, an organization outside the scope of military and police institutions, he is able to see through the manipulation. This dual identity allows him to break free from the page's effect and recognize the truth, leading him to act against his own commanding officer, Fukuchi Ōchi.
Over the course of the story, Tachihara experiences significant development. He begins as a character driven by vengeance and a desire to prove himself, but gradually comes to question where his true loyalties lie. His time in the Port Mafia gives him a sense of belonging he did not expect, and he ultimately chooses to protect the people he cares about rather than follow orders blindly. In his confrontation with Fukuchi, he is gravely wounded and subsequently turned into a vampire by Bram Stoker, losing his sense of self. His fate remains unresolved as he becomes a tool of the enemy, but his actions before his fall demonstrate his growth from a conflicted spy into someone willing to fight for his own convictions.
