TV-Series
Description
Maho, known as Mallow in English-language versions, is a primary character in the Pokémon Sun & Moon anime series. She is a cheerful and energetic student at the Pokémon School on Melemele Island in the Alola region. She lives with her father, Abe, and helps run the family establishment, Aina's Kitchen, a restaurant in Konikoni City. Her older brother, Ulu, is also a cook who travels the world in search of new recipes and culinary inspiration.

Personality-wise, Maho is consistently portrayed as optimistic, friendly, and passionate, particularly when it comes to cooking for both people and Pokémon. She often uses food-related metaphors to describe situations and is known for her energetic and sometimes scatterbrained approach to life, occasionally jumping to hasty conclusions. Her primary motivation is to make her family’s restaurant the best in the world, a dream that drives many of her actions throughout the series.

Maho’s role in the story is as one of Ash’s close classmates and friends. She frequently participates in the group’s adventures, school activities, and missions as a member of the Ultra Guardians, a task force dedicated to dealing with Ultra Beast incidents. Her story is deeply tied to her personal history, particularly the loss of her mother. As a child, Maho grew frustrated with her mother’s frequent hospital stays and, in a moment of anger, declared that she hated her. Her mother passed away shortly after, leaving Maho with lasting feelings of guilt. In a pivotal episode on Poni Island, the guardian deity Tapu Fini’s mist allowed Maho to briefly reunite with her mother’s spirit. She apologized for her past words, expressed her gratitude, and finally found a sense of closure. Following this emotional reconciliation, a wild Shaymin, the Gratitude Pokémon, was attracted to her feelings and chose to stay with her for a time.

Maho shares a particularly strong friendship with her classmate Suiren, known as Lana in English. The two have known each other since they were young, having shared an adventure where they got lost in a forest and were rescued by a kind Drampa they nicknamed "Grandpa Forest". Maho also forms a unique bond with a wise Oranguru who runs a hidden café in the forest. She begins volunteering to help Oranguru serve its customers, an experience that inspires her to expand her dream for Aina’s Kitchen to welcome not just people, but Pokémon as well. Her respect for nature and strong connection to Grass-type Pokémon is a consistent trait, aligning with her role in the video games as a Trial Captain who specializes in that type.

Throughout the Sun & Moon series, Maho experiences notable development. Her primary Pokémon is a Bounsweet, a gift from her mother, which evolves into a Steenee during a confrontation with Team Rocket and later into a Tsareena after learning the move Stomp. This evolution into Tsareena marks a significant growth in both the Pokémon’s maturity and Maho’s own confidence as a trainer. Maho herself grows from a girl simply helping at her father’s restaurant into a more confident individual who earns her own Z-Ring. She receives a worn Z-Ring from Oranguru, which is later repaired by the Island Kahuna, Olivia, and is subsequently rewarded with a Grassium-Z by the guardian deity Tapu Koko after impressing it with a special dish. She enters the Alola League, where she has a heartfelt but ultimately losing battle against her best friend Lana, showcasing her determination and the deep bond she shares with her Tsareena.
