Description
Néphie, known as Lana in the English version of the anime, is a student at the Pokémon School in the Alola region and one of the classmates of the series' protagonist. She is introduced in the first episode of the Pokémon Sun & Moon animated series, where she is shown arriving at the school alongside several other students. She lives at home with her parents and her younger twin sisters, Peggy and Cécile, in a seaside town in Alola, and she is frequently seen near the ocean, fishing, swimming, or travelling across the water on a Lapras. She has short blue hair, blue eyes, and a slight build, and she often wears a yellow headband that resembles a fishing net, along with a sailor-style top.

Néphie is calm, gentle, and soft-spoken, and she tends to stay somewhat in the background of her lively group of friends. She rarely raises her voice, except during Pokémon battles, when she becomes fully focused and works in perfect harmony with her partner. In everyday life she can be quietly mischievous, and she enjoys playing tricks and telling exaggerated fisherman stories, such as claiming to have caught a Kyogre or to have earned her Water-type Z-Crystal by battling a giant sea creature. She is also very convincing when telling scary stories around a campfire. Beneath her composed manner she is courageous and protective; before the events of the series, she rescued her first Pokémon, a Popplio, from Team Skull and nursed it back to health. She is deeply devoted to her family and takes her role as the older sister very seriously, although she can become intimidating when her twin sisters are too disruptive. She is an energetic and agile girl with a large appetite, remarkable accuracy when casting a fishing line, and a tendency to hold a small grudge when someone bothers her.

Her main motivations are her love of Water-type Pokémon and the sea, her sense of responsibility toward her younger sisters, and her quiet ambition to grow as a trainer alongside her Pokémon. In the story she is a regular member of the main group of classmates, joining their lessons, outings, and training sessions. She later becomes part of the Ultra Guardians, a team formed to deal with mysterious Ultra Beasts, and she takes part in missions such as locating the Ultra Beast Kartana and helping to lure Pheromosa. During the Alola League, she qualifies for the main tournament by winning the opening Battle Royal with her Eevee, defeats her friend Barbara in the next round with her Primarina, and is eliminated in the quarter-finals by Guzma.

Her closest relationships are with her family and her Pokémon. Her twin sisters are playful and sometimes embarrassing, but she cares for them deeply and they help her around the house. Her most important bond is with her first Pokémon, a Popplio that she saved from Team Skull and trained from the beginning of the series. Over time that Popplio evolves into Brionne and finally Primarina. She also later befriends and catches a travel-weary Eevee, nicknamed Sabli, which becomes a cheerful and affectionate member of her team. Among her classmates she shares a close friendship with the protagonist, training alongside him and helping him with her knowledge of the water, and she has a notable friendly rivalry with Barbara, which plays out in their League battle.

Her development is closely tied to her growth as a Water-type specialist. Early in the series she learns to craft water balloons with her Popplio, then travels to Brooklet Hill in search of a powerful fish, where she faces the Totem Pokémon with help and obtains a Waterium Z. Later she receives a Z-Ring and masters the Z-Move Super Tourbillon Abyssal after rigorous training with an experienced performer. Her Popplio evolves into Brionne while creating an enormous water bubble during a vocal training session, and it later evolves into Primarina during a dramatic encounter in which she hooks a wild Kyogre and helps protect it from hunters. She then receives a Primarium Z, allowing her Primarina to use its signature Z-Move.

Her notable abilities include expert swimming and diving, strong fishing skills with precise casting, a natural confidence in all water-related activities, and the ability to ride large Water-type Pokémon such as her Lapras and even the wild Kyogre she once saved. In battle she is calm and precise, and her fighting style relies on trust and perfect coordination with her water Pokémon rather than force or noise.
