Description
Danh is the Kahuna of Ula'ula Island in the Alola region, serving as its official island leader and a specialist in Dark-type Pokémon. His background includes a history as a former member of the International Police, a role that has significantly shaped his world-weary perspective. Despite his official title and responsibilities, Danh presents a consistently exhausted and apathetic demeanor, often appearing disinterested in the tasks and challenges before him. This blasé attitude, however, is largely a facade that conceals a sharp mind, a strong sense of duty, and the abilities of a highly talented Pokémon trainer who is willing to take risks to help others when necessary.

Throughout the narrative of the Sun & Moon series, Danh's primary motivation stems from his obligation as the Kahuna chosen by the island's guardian Pokémon, Tapu Bulu. He takes his role in the island challenge seriously, administering the grand trial for Ula'ula Island to test the growth and skill of young trainers. While he refuses offers to join the Alola Elite Four, believing his only true responsibility is to his position as Kahuna, his past continues to influence his actions. He has a significant personal history with Anabel, having helped rescue her when she washed ashore on Alola with amnesia, and he was also a former partner to the international agent Looker. His character is grounded in his role as the guardian of a police station on Route 17, a quiet and solitary place where he resides surrounded by the many Alolan Meowth he has taken in.

In terms of key relationships, Danh acts as a mentor and guardian figure to Acerola, a Trial Captain who is also his niece. He is one of the few people who understands the truth about the Aether Foundation and the threat of the Ultra Beasts, a knowledge he gains from his police work. His interactions with the player character are defined by a gruff exterior, but he shows respect for their growing strength, eventually gifting them the Darkinium Z, a Z-Crystal that allows a Pokémon to use a powerful Dark-type move. In the anime adaptation, he is also revealed to be an old acquaintance of Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket.

Danh experiences a subtle yet clear development over the course of the story. Although he initially appears to be someone who has withdrawn from the world, his involvement in the escalating crisis involving the Ultra Beasts and the Aether Foundation forces him to re-engage with his past. He steps up to play an active role in protecting Alola, demonstrating that his detached personality is a mask for a reliable and brave individual. Regarding his notable abilities, Danh is a master of Dark-type Pokémon, and his signature partner is an Alolan Persian. As a Kahuna, he has authority over the island's grand trial, and his skill as a trainer is formidable enough that he was personally asked to join the region's Elite Four, an offer he declined.
