Description
Manuel Oak is the principal of the Pokémon School in the Alola region. He is the cousin of Professor Samuel Oak from Kanto, and the two share a strong physical resemblance, though Manuel has a tanned complexion, long gray hair, and typically wears casual, brightly patterned shirts and shorts. He first appears in the Pokémon Sun & Moon anime when Ash Ketchum and his mother Delia deliver a Pokémon Egg to him. Manuel’s primary role is to oversee the education of young trainers at the school, where he assigns projects, organizes activities, and provides guidance.

He is an easygoing and cheerful individual with a fondness for making simple, often groan-worthy puns using Pokémon names. Despite his playful demeanor, he is a knowledgeable Pokémon researcher who studies regional variations, such as Alolan forms, and has a particular interest in how Pokémon adapt to different environments. In the games, he also researches Totem Pokémon, though in the anime this aspect is less emphasized.

Manuel’s motivations center on fostering a love for Pokémon in his students and advancing his research on Alolan species. He takes a hands-on approach to teaching, as seen when he gives his class a choice between two Eggs: one from Kanto and one found on Mount Lanakila. When the class selects the white Egg, he cares for the remaining one himself, which later hatches into a Vulpix. He also owns a Komala that often sleeps on a tree at the school and is used to ring the bell.

In the story, Manuel serves as both a mentor and a source of comic relief. He participates in events such as the Pokémon Pancake Race, which he wins riding his Komala. He accompanies the class on field trips, including a journey to Kanto where he reunites with his cousin. His key relationships include his cousin Professor Oak, the school’s faculty member Professor Kukui, and the student group that includes Ash, Lillie, Kiawe, Mallow, Lana, and Sophocles.

Manuel shows modest development over the series: he becomes more personally invested in his students’ growth and demonstrates genuine care for the Pokémon under his charge, particularly his newly hatched Vulpix. His abilities include a solid understanding of Pokémon biology and regional adaptations, as well as competent Pokémon training skills. He is also known for his knack for wordplay, a trait that defines his interactions with others.
