Description
Bassler is a character from the anime Izetta: The Last Witch, serving as a captain in the Germanian Air Force. He has brown eyes and short brown hair cut to ear length, with the appearance of an adult male.

Bassler is portrayed as a patriotic and duty-bound soldier with a strong sense of loyalty to his homeland. He is depicted as a man who values ideals, camaraderie, and the human connections that define the fatherland he serves. His character is defined by a deep-seated unease regarding the unconventional methods employed by his own side, particularly the use of the witch Sophie as a military asset. This discomfort stems from a traditional soldier's perspective, one that questions the reliance on supernatural powers over conventional military might.

Initially, Bassler is an antagonist to the protagonists, Finé and Izetta. He first encounters the last witch when he and his squadron attack the transport plane carrying the captured Princess Finé. After the plane crashes, Bassler and his wingmen pursue the two survivors through the mountains. In this engagement, Izetta is forced to reveal her magic, using her powers to destroy his entire squadron. Bassler’s own plane is disabled when Finé fires an enchanted anti-tank rifle, striking his engine and forcing him down. Following this defeat, he is later interviewed by the intelligence officer Arnold Berkmann, who seeks to analyze the witch's capabilities and identify her limits.

His primary narrative function is to act as a direct foil to Berkmann. While Berkmann is self-serving, manipulative, and ultimately abandons Germania, Bassler remains steadfast in his commitment to his nation and its people. He questions Berkmann's loyalties and confronts the intelligence officer over his perceived selfishness and betrayal of the fatherland, accusing him of caring only for himself. Bassler believes that caring for others and holding onto ideals is what makes people human, a philosophy directly opposing Berkmann's pragmatism. In their final confrontation, Bassler trains his pistol on the unrepentant Berkmann and fires. His relationship with the young soldier Rickert is implied to be one of a brother-figure or mentor, adding a layer of personal connection to his professional duties.

As the war reaches its conclusion, Bassler launches on a final sortie to defend his homeland from the advancing Allied forces. His fate is left unknown, though it is strongly implied that he likely perished in this desperate defensive action. In terms of abilities, he is a skilled pilot capable of leading a fighter squadron in combat. He also demonstrates proficiency with a pistol as a sidearm.
