TV-Series
Description
Iok Kujan is a central antagonist in the second season of the series, serving as the young head of the Kujan family, one of the Seven Stars that rule the military organization Gjallarhorn. As the head of one of these seven founding families, he holds a position of immense privilege and authority, commanding a section of the Arianrhod Fleet under the overall command of Rustal Elion.
Iok is defined by his reckless, impulsive, and thoroughly arrogant personality. He is a man of action who habitually acts without careful thought, a flaw that consistently endangers both himself and his subordinates. His conduct is driven by the Kujan family motto, which dictates that one must crush the enemy with all their might. Despite sincerely caring for his men and being burdened by their sacrifices, he is completely incapable of recognizing that his own poor leadership and rash decisions are the direct cause of their deaths. Instead, he irrationally places the blame on others, particularly the protagonist group Tekkadan.
Iok's primary motivation is a desperate desire to prove himself and impress his mentor and superior, Rustal Elion, whom he deeply admires as a role model. He is constantly seeking Rustal's attention and approval, a goal that drives him to extreme and unethical lengths. His passion and frankness, while seen as a weakness by some, are noted as the very traits that convinced Rustal to form an alliance with him.
In the story, Iok functions as a major source of conflict and a catalyst for tragic events. His most significant early action occurs on Mars when he ignores warnings from McGillis Fareed and approaches a dormant Mobile Armor with his mobile suit. The Ahab Reactors in his machines awaken the ancient weapon, Hashmal, leading to the death of his own men and the destruction of a civilian agricultural facility. Instead of accepting responsibility, he swears vengeance against Tekkadan, blaming them for the catastrophe he caused.
His vendetta leads him to form a covert alliance with Jasley Donomikols. Together, they frame the Turbines, a group allied with Tekkadan, for possession of illegal weapons. Iok leads a brutal assault on the Turbines, deploying the forbidden Dainsleif railguns against their civilian ships and ignoring their attempts to surrender, an act he celebrates despite acknowledging its immorality. This attack results in the deaths of the Turbines' leaders, Naze and Amida, making Iok directly responsible for one of the series' most pivotal and tragic massacres.
Iok's key relationships highlight his character. He looks up to Rustal Elion, who treats him as a useful but expendable tool. He often works alongside the skilled pilot Julieta Juris, who rescues him multiple times and holds him in barely concealed contempt for his idiocy. He is a rival to McGillis Fareed, whose calculated competence stands in stark contrast to Iok's recklessness. He also has a relationship with the underworld figure Jasley Donomikols, whom he uses as an agent to carry out his dirty work.
Development is largely absent in Iok Kujan. He remains consistently reckless, arrogant, and oblivious to the consequences of his actions until his very end. In the final battle against Tekkadan, he pilots a standard Graze mobile suit to hunt down the crippled Gundam Gusion. As he prepares to deliver the final blow, he proudly announces his own name. His declaration gives the pilot, Akihiro Altland, the focus to recognize him as the murderer of his friends. In a fit of vengeful rage, Akihiro uses the Gusion's giant scissors to crush Iok's cockpit, killing him as his allies watch in horror.
In terms of abilities, Iok Kujan is not depicted as an exceptional pilot. He is a somewhat effective sniper when using his customized Reginlaze unit, which is equipped with a railgun. However, his overall performance on the battlefield is poor, and his primary skill is said to be his ability to move and inspire those around him with his passionate, if misguided, frankness.
