Description
Kudelia Aina Bernstein is a young woman from the Bernstein family, a powerful and wealthy Martian aristocratic clan. She is introduced as an idealistic and determined daughter of the Martian colony’s upper class, but she becomes a central figure in the movement for Martian independence from the economic and political domination of Earth’s four power blocs. Her background is one of privilege, yet she rejects the passive role expected of her, seeking instead to challenge the systemic exploitation of Mars by Earth-based economic conglomerates.
Personality wise, Kudelia begins as naive and sheltered, having grown up in a controlled environment with little direct exposure to the harsh realities of war, poverty, and child labor. However, she possesses a strong sense of justice, deep empathy, and an unshakable belief that dialogue and political negotiation can lead to change. Over time, her experiences on the run with the mercenary group Tekkadan harden her resolve and broaden her understanding. She learns to compromise pragmatically while never fully abandoning her core ideals. She can be stubborn and sometimes too trusting, but her sincerity and willingness to listen earn her genuine loyalty.
Her primary motivation is to secure economic and political autonomy for Mars. She seeks to negotiate directly with Earth’s economic blocs to gain equal rights and fair trading conditions for Mars, which is otherwise treated as a resource colony. As the story progresses, her goal expands to include protecting the children and young soldiers of Tekkadan, seeing them as victims of the same system she fights against.
In the story, Kudelia acts as the political and moral anchor for Tekkadan. Initially a client whose escort mission drives the first season’s plot, she quickly becomes an active strategist and symbolic leader. She is instrumental in organizing the independence movement, using her family name to open political doors while leveraging Tekkadan’s military strength as a bargaining tool. Her role evolves from a protected princess-like figure to a shrewd political operator and business leader, eventually founding the Admoss Company to manage Mars’s resources and provide legitimate work for former soldiers.
Key relationships define much of her journey. Her bond with Orga Itsuka, Tekkadan’s leader, is one of mutual respect and shared ambition; she trusts his judgment in combat, and he relies on her political acumen. With Mikazuki Augus, Tekkadan’s ace pilot, she shares a quieter but profound connection—he protects her without question, and she comes to understand his detached, survival-driven worldview. The most significant relationship is with Atra Mixta, another member of Tekkadan. Their friendship deepens into a familial bond, and by the end of the series, they jointly raise Mikazuki’s child, forming a non-traditional but loving family unit. Kudelia also clashes and eventually cooperates with figures like McMurdo Barriston and Nobliss Gordon, learning to navigate the corrupt world of Martian and Earth politics.
Kudelia undergoes significant development. In the first season, she transitions from a sheltered activist who needs constant protection to a courageous negotiator who stands on the front lines of battle to advocate for peace. In the second season, she matures into a pragmatic leader burdened by the costs of war and the losses Tekkadan suffers. She learns that idealism alone is insufficient and that force is sometimes necessary, but she also witnesses how violence can spiral beyond control. By the end of the series, she has largely abandoned her initial pacifist purity, yet she remains committed to creating a world where children like those in Tekkadan do not have to fight.
Notable abilities include her political intuition, public speaking, and diplomatic skill. She is not a pilot or a soldier, but she possesses strong organizational abilities and a talent for building coalitions. She is also a quick learner, mastering the complexities of interplanetary trade and legislation over the course of the story. Her greatest ability is her resilience—she endures assassination attempts, public smear campaigns, and the trauma of losing close comrades, yet she continues to push for her vision of Martian independence.
