Description
Hush Middy is a supporting character introduced in the second season of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans as a new member of the private military company Tekkadan.
Before joining Tekkadan, Hush grew up without parents in a slum, living with a group of orphans. His closest friend was a boy named Bills, who served as the leader of their group. In an effort to earn money to support the other children, Bills joined the Chryse Guard Security (CGS) and underwent the Alaya-Vijnana surgical procedure to become a mobile suit pilot. The surgery failed, leaving Bills paralyzed from the waist down. Overwhelmed by his condition and inability to care for the other orphans, Bills eventually committed suicide. This traumatic experience shaped Hushs worldview and provided his primary motivation for joining Tekkadan: he felt he had to become strong enough to take Bills place as a provider for the children left behind.
Hush is a quiet individual who is intensely focused on a singular goal: to surpass Mikazuki Augus, Tekkadans ace pilot. His initial attitude toward Mikazuki is one of open rivalry and resentment. He sees Mikazuki sleeping in the hangar and fails to understand what makes him so special, leading to a confrontation with senior members. This dislike is rooted in his past, as he is bitter that Mikazuki was able to successfully undergo the Alaya-Vijnana procedure three times without crippling side effects, while his friend Bills died after a single failed attempt. He is driven and ambitious, wanting to ride a mobile suit to make a name for himself and prove his worth.
As his character develops, Hush proves to be remarkably honest about his own strengths and weaknesses. After witnessing Mikazukis overwhelming piloting skill during a battle with the Dawn Horizon Corps, his attitude shifts from resentment to grudging respect. He approaches Mikazuki directly and asks to become his disciple, seeking to learn from him. He approaches Nadi Yukinojo Kassapa about becoming a pilot and even expresses willingness to undergo the dangerous Alaya-Vijnana surgery himself. It is explained to him that he is too old for the procedure, as the nanomachines required for it only settle properly in the bodies of children who are still growing. Unable to rely on the system that gave Mikazuki his power, Hush dedicates himself to rigorous physical and simulated training to improve his natural piloting abilities.
Hushs primary role in the story is as a foil to Mikazuki Augus, representing a more conventional soldier who must struggle to achieve what the genetically-enhanced protagonist can do with ease. He also becomes an essential support system for Mikazuki. After a battle with the ancient mobile armor Hashmal leaves Mikazukis right side completely paralyzed, Hush takes on the responsibility of carrying him, bringing him food, and acting as his personal attendant. In this role, he constantly observes Mikazuki. He sees a stark parallel to his friend Bills, as both men were left physically crippled. However, where Bills despaired and took his own life, Mikazuki accepted his limitations as a necessary price to protect his family and continued moving forward without regret. This observation transforms Hushs initial resentment into genuine admiration and loyalty.
His key relationship is with Mikazuki Augus. He begins as his rival, then becomes his student, and finally serves as his devoted caretaker and comrade-in-arms. He also develops significant relationships with his fellow new recruits. He becomes friends with the quiet Dane Uhai, who offers him sage advice about the mentality of a pilot. He frequently butts heads with Zack Lowe, a realist who is hesitant to risk his life, contrasting with Hushs headstrong determination to fight.
Hushs development arc follows his journey from an angry, insecure newcomer to a reliable soldier. He starts as a gunner on a mobile worker and later transitions to piloting a mobile suit. His first battle in a mobile suit, a Shiden, is a humiliating failure; he is unilaterally attacked and nearly killed, only to be rescued by Mikazuki, who tells him he is in the way. Rather than giving up, Hush uses this shame as fuel for relentless training. Within a short time, his skills improve significantly, allowing him to compete with veteran pilots like Chad in sparring matches. He eventually inherits the STH-20 Hekija, a mobile suit that belonged to the fallen pilot Lafter Frankland, and uses it to participate in the raid against the JPT Trust, where he proves capable of holding his own in combat.
Hushs notable abilities are entirely self-made. Unlike many of Tekkadans aces, he does not possess the Alaya-Vijnana system that provides a direct neural interface with a mobile suit. He relies purely on standard controls, his own reflexes, and intense training. He is a fast learner who goes from being a novice who freezes in combat to a competent pilot capable of defeating multiple enemy grunts. He is also mechanically inclined, having originally worked sorting waste and likely performing maintenance, and he personally tunes his own mobile suit. In his final battle, despite the Hekijas combat data being optimized for space and unsuitable for ground combat, he fights desperately against Gjallarhorn forces to buy time for Tekkadan to escape. He successfully destroys one enemy but is fatally wounded when another strikes his cockpit. Mortally injured, he tells Mikazuki not to stop and to keep moving forward, dying with a smile when his mentor acknowledges him.
