Description
Masamune Makabe is the main protagonist of the romance comedy series. As a child, he was overweight, timid, and deeply infatuated with the wealthy and blunt Aki Adagaki. When he confessed his feelings, she cruelly rejected him and gave him the nickname Pig's Foot, an experience that left him humiliated and heartbroken. Determined to exact revenge, Masamune spent years dramatically transforming himself. He lost weight, adopted a strict fitness and diet regimen, changed his surname, and refined his appearance and social skills. By the time he enters high school, he has become a slim, fit, and strikingly handsome young man with a polished, confident demeanor.
His personality is built around a calculated, narcissistic drive to make Aki fall in love with him only to cruelly reject her, mirroring the pain she caused him. He is meticulous and goal-oriented, often planning every interaction to further his revenge. Outwardly, he acts charming, polite, and approachable, but his internal monologue reveals insecurity, anxiety about his past being discovered, and a tendency toward overthinking. Despite his scheming nature, he is fundamentally good-hearted and struggles with his own growing, genuine feelings for Aki. He also has a comical fear of spiders, which shatters his cool facade.
Masamune’s primary motivation is revenge for his childhood rejection, but as the story unfolds, his motives become complicated. He begins to doubt his plan as he spends more time with Aki and witnesses her vulnerable moments. He also learns that his memory of the rejection may not be entirely accurate, forcing him to reconsider the truth of his past. His character arc centers on reconciling his need for vengeance with the realization that people change and that love and forgiveness are more meaningful than revenge.
In the story, Masamune transfers to Aki’s school and initiates his Dead or Love plan, with the covert help of Aki’s maid, Yoshino Koiwai. His role drives the narrative forward, but he also serves as the lens through which the themes of self-image, forgiveness, and emotional growth are explored. Key relationships include his complicated dynamic with Aki, which evolves from a target to a genuine romantic interest; his alliance with Yoshino, whose true motives later add depth to his journey; and the arrival of Neko Fujinomiya, a seemingly perfect girl who confesses to him and tests his commitment to his original plan. He also faces a rival, Kanetsugu Gasou, who impersonates him.
Throughout the series, Masamune develops from a bitter, revenge-obsessed schemer into a more self-aware and emotionally honest individual. He learns to confront his own flaws, accept his past, and choose genuine connection over petty retribution. His physical transformation is matched by an emotional one, culminating in a confrontation with his past self and a decision about what he truly wants. Notable abilities include his physical fitness and endurance from years of training, his strategic intelligence and charisma in social situations, and a talent for baking that he occasionally uses to win favors.
