Description
George Shimaki, often referred to simply as George, is a veteran member of the Osaka Gantz team who appears during the Nurarihyon alien mission. He is a dark-skinned, bald, and muscular man, and despite his appearance, he is Japanese. Before being brought into the Gantz game, he worked at a restaurant alongside his fellow team member Nobuo Muroya.
In terms of personality, George embodies many of the traits common to the powerful Osaka team, primarily arrogance and a careless disregard for both his own safety and that of his teammates. This is starkly illustrated when Muroya, who appears to be a close friend, decides to confront a dangerous alien alone; after the situation turns against Muroya, George refuses to provide assistance, despite their friendship. His motivations are driven by the high-stakes point system of Gantz. He is a seasoned player who has successfully accumulated one hundred points three times, yet he has consistently chosen to have his memory erased and remain in the game rather than be freed, indicating a deep-seated commitment to this violent existence.
Within the story of the Osaka mission, George plays the role of a powerful but flawed ally. He is first seen dismissing the Tokyo team, ordering them not to steal any of the points from the hunt. During the mission, he pairs up with another powerful fighter nicknamed Knob, and the two engage in a competitive challenge to kill powerful aliens within a time limit. At one point, alongside Knob and Kazuo Kuwabara, George helps save the Tokyo teammates Kei Kurono, Masaru Kato, and Anzu Yamasaki from a group of boss aliens. After Knob is mortally wounded in his own solo fight, George declares he will kill the remaining alien by himself. He succeeds in this, dispatching a boss worth a significant number of points with his katana and proving his capabilities as a fighter.
His key relationships are primarily with his Osaka teammates, especially Nobuo Muroya and Kazuo Kuwabara. The culture of the team, where individual glory often trumps camaraderie, defines these interactions. When the final boss, Nurarihyon, arrives, George and Kuwabara agree to fight it together, and they initially manage to slice it to pieces. However, the alien reforms and adapts to their sword attacks. Kuwabara then declares the monster is too much for him and leaves, stating that their team leader, Oka, will finish it. In a moment of desperate resolve, George refuses to retreat. He attacks Nurarihyon directly, attempting to squeeze it to death with his bare hands. This act of defiance marks a tragic development from his earlier arrogance, as the plan backfires. The alien transforms into a colossal mass of female figures, and in this new form, it kills him.
George is a capable fighter, a fact that is sometimes debated by his own teammates; for instance, Yamasaki claims he "fights like a retard" and is the lowest-ranked on the team. Nevertheless, his combat prowess is self-evident. He is proficient with the standard Gantz arsenal, primarily utilizing the Z-Gun for ranged attacks and a katana for close-quarters combat, the latter of which he used to single-handedly kill a high-value alien. His notable abilities are tied to his experience and physical strength, but they are ultimately not enough to overcome the adaptive and formidable power of the final boss.
