Description
Demon Nurari is the primary antagonist featured in the Osaka mission arc of Gantz, serving as the leader of a formidable group of yokai aliens. Its design and behavior are heavily rooted in the Japanese folklore figure of the Nurarihyon, a mischievous and aristocratic entity often depicted as a commander of other spirits. Staying true to this mythological origin, Demon Nurari is characterized less by mindless malice and more by a cruel, playful, and mocking intelligence, treating its confrontation with the Gantz hunters as an elaborate and darkly humorous game. This trickster nature is its most defining personality trait, as it prefers to toy with its opponents by stealing, mimicking, and cruelly parodying their most prominent features rather than simply eliminating them.

Within the story of the mission, Demon Nurari is the ultimate target. It is the highest-value alien on the battlefield, worth a substantial 100 points, which signifies that its defeat alone would be enough for the participating hunters to clear the mission and earn their freedom. The creature commands a host of other powerful aliens, including a Tengu and an Inugami, and its sheer power forces the elite Osaka team, known for its strength and experience, to collaborate with the less seasoned Tokyo team in a desperate fight for survival.

Key relationships are defined by this adversarial dynamic, particularly with the strongest hunters. It engages in a prolonged and transformative battle with Oka, the ace of the Osaka team, and later with the Tokyo team members. Its development throughout the fight is directly tied to its primary ability: rapid and adaptive shapeshifting. Each time it is severely wounded or killed, Demon Nurari regenerates and evolves into a new form that directly counters or mocks the method of its previous defeat. For instance, it takes on a form of a giant made of naked women to fight the sexually obsessed Kuwabara, and later develops a muscular physique to mock the power fighter Kaze. This transformation sequence progresses from an unassuming old man into a giant humanoid with deadly eye beams, a monstrous skull-headed beast, and numerous other terrifying and grotesque incarnations.

Its motives extend beyond simple survival. During a brief but significant pause in the conflict, Masaru Kato confronts Demon Nurari, demanding to know the reason behind the forced killings of the Gantz game. In response, Demon Nurari alludes to a higher, god-like entity with absolute power, implying that the entire conflict is a form of amusement or a natural disaster on a cosmic scale, a phenomenon to be endured rather than understood. This response highlights its role not as the ultimate source of evil, but as a powerful agent operating under incomprehensible divine whims. Its notable abilities include potent regenerative capabilities that allow it to recover from near-total destruction, firing powerful invisible or visible laser beams from its eyes that can disintegrate targets, immense physical strength and agility, and its core ability to shapeshift instantly into a vast array of forms, each with unique properties and weapons. This combination of immense power, regenerative immortality, and a sadistic sense of humor makes Demon Nurari one of the most formidable and memorable adversaries the Gantz hunters have ever faced.
