Description
Anzu Yamazaki is a key female character from the Osaka Gantz team. She is 23 years old and works as a manga artist, specifically creating erotic manga, a fact that contrasts with her relatively cute and innocent appearance. Anzu has short, dark brown or black hair and lives in an apartment in Osaka with her three-year-old son. The father of her child is not present or mentioned, leaving her as a single mother who works to support her small family.
Her personality is initially defined by a cynical and nonchalant attitude. When she first meets Masaru Kato, a member of the Tokyo team, she openly mocks his selfless efforts to save civilians from aliens, viewing his altruism as hypocritical or foolish. She follows him expecting to see a contradiction in his actions, but his unwavering bravery and genuine kindness eventually break through her hardened exterior. Beneath her tough, outspoken demeanor lies a caring and deeply loyal individual. Her primary motivation is the survival and well-being of her son, which compels her to fight. However, after meeting Kato, her motivations expand to include protecting him, as she sees a similar protective instinct in him toward his own younger brother.
In the story, Anzu begins as a member of the battle-hardened Osaka team, which is largely composed of ruthless and psychotic fighters. Her role becomes intertwined with Kato's as she shifts from being a cynical observer to a committed ally. She feels a strong emotional connection to Kato due to their shared responsibility of caring for a younger family member. Her key relationship is with Masaru Kato; she falls in love with him and ultimately asks him and his brother to move in with her and her son after the mission concludes.
Anzu undergoes significant development from a cynical fighter into a self-sacrificing hero. During the final battle against the powerful alien Nurarihyon, Kato is immobilized. To protect him from a fatal attack, Anzu throws herself in the way and is killed in action. Her death is a pivotal, tragic moment that inspires another team member to promise to use his points to revive her. True to this promise, she is later brought back to life. Following her revival, she reunites with Kato and continues to fight alongside him in subsequent missions, displaying bravery and a willingness to face danger to protect civilians and her allies.
Regarding her abilities, Anzu is a capable fighter equipped with the standard Gantz suit and weaponry. While not portrayed as the most powerful member of the Osaka team, she is resourceful and brave in combat. Her most notable abilities are not superhuman but rather her emotional resilience and her capacity for love and sacrifice, which drive her to risk everything for those she cares about.
