Description
Nurari, known in full as Nurarihyon, is the principal antagonist of the animated film GANTZ:O and the leader of the alien force encountered during the Osaka mission. He is identified by the Gantz system as an exceptionally dangerous target, carrying a point value of 100, the highest assigned to any enemy in that mission, which marks him as the ultimate challenge for the hunters. His name and design draw from the traditional Japanese yōkai called the nurarihyon, a slippery and elusive spirit often depicted as an enigmatic older figure, and this folkloric inspiration is reflected in his strange, unsettling presence and his talent for shifting shape.

In the story, Nurarihyon presides over the alien host that decimates the Osaka team and the assembled hunters. He commands a collection of powerful yōkai-themed subordinates, including a tengu and an inugami, both of which are themselves formidable threats. As the mission progresses and the lesser aliens are defeated, Nurarihyon steps forward as the final obstacle, and the surviving members of the Tokyo and Osaka teams are forced to confront him directly. His role is that of the final boss of the mission, and nearly the entire climax of the film revolves around the attempt to bring him down.

His personality is defined by a strange inconsistency that reflects his transformations. At the beginning of the mission he is quiet, distant, and apparently without emotion, observing the slaughter around him without reaction or commentary. Once he is drawn into genuine combat, however, he becomes markedly different, turning talkative and almost cheerful, making small utterances of interest and appreciation while fighting, and treating the battle as a form of entertainment. He is completely confident in his own abilities, to the point of being careless, and he shows little concern for the damage he takes because he is certain of his superiority. His motivation is not rooted in malice or any grand ambition; he engages in the fight because it interests him, and he seems to measure his amusement by the resistance his opponents can offer.

Nurarihyon serves as a destructive force rather than a dialogue-heavy character, so his relationships are defined mostly through combat. He is the leader of the alien group, and his subordinates follow him into battle, but he shows no personal attachment to them. His significant interactions are with the human hunters, and he fights against several of them during the mission before entering into a prolonged and decisive duel with Masaru Kato, which becomes the central confrontation of the film. Throughout these encounters he remains dismissive and playful, only shifting his demeanor once his opponents prove capable of hurting him.

Because GANTZ:O covers a single mission, Nurarihyon does not undergo personal development in the traditional sense. Instead, his evolution is expressed through his behavior and his abilities as the conflict escalates. He begins as a passive, silent figure, becomes a talkative and overconfident combatant in the middle stages of the fight, and is eventually pushed into increasingly desperate and unstable states as the hunters discover how to harm him. This progression ends with his defeat, when the remaining fighters coordinate their attacks to exploit the vulnerabilities hidden within his transformations.

Nurarihyon's combat capability is built around a series of distinct forms, each tied to a different aspect of his nature and each granting him a new set of powers. In one form he splits his body apart to slip out of physical attacks and can multiply himself into enormous numbers of duplicates. In another he becomes a female-bodied, aggregate creature that devours humans and secretes corrosive liquid. A third form grants him telekinetic shockwaves with enough area-of-effect force to level buildings. He also possesses a form that grants hyper-speed regeneration, allowing him to regrow severed limbs almost instantly, though this version of him can only be killed if multiple cores are destroyed at the same moment. Another ability allows him to detonate himself in an explosion that covers the entire battlefield. He can also encase himself in demonic bone armor strong enough to withstand armor-piercing weaponry, and in his most extreme state he loses all rationality and becomes an indiscriminate attacker with his combat power at its peak. Despite all of this, he remains vulnerable to well-timed and unexpected attacks, and it is this weakness that ultimately allows the hunters to overcome him, forcing him through his final forms before he is finally destroyed.
