Description
Eijirou Kirishima is a student in Class 1-A at U.A. High School, where he is training to become a professional hero. He is known for his bright red, spiky hair, which he styles upward each morning, though its natural color is black and it hangs straight when not styled. He has a muscular build and stands around 170 centimeters tall. On his right eye, there is a small scar, a permanent reminder from when his Quirk first manifested at the age of three; he accidentally scratched himself with a hardened hand while waking up. He has a set of naturally pointed teeth, adding to his sharp and energetic appearance.
Personality-wise, Kirishima is a quintessential hot-blooded and cheerful individual, known for being friendly and easily getting along with almost everyone in his class. He often judges actions and people through the lens of being manly, a term he uses to describe things that are brave, honest, self-sacrificing, and admirable, regardless of the gender of the person performing the act. He is easily moved to tears by displays of genuine heroism and manly spirit. While he is typically lighthearted and playful, often joking with his friends, he possesses a serious and mature side that emerges when his principles are tested. His sociability is so high that he is frequently seen chatting with various classmates in the background, serving as a unifying presence who helps maintain the group's cohesion.
Kirishima’s primary motivation stems from a past struggle with insecurity. He originally felt his Hardening Quirk was plain and uninspiring, and he lacked confidence in his own courage. A pivotal moment occurred in middle school when he witnessed his classmate Mina Ashido bravely stand up to a villain while he was frozen in fear. This event, combined with the inspiring words of the retro hero Crimson Riot, who admitted to feeling fear but acting anyway, drove Kirishima to change himself. He dyed his hair red, adopted a more assertive persona, and dedicated himself to becoming a hero who never lets fear hold him back. He later chose the hero name Red Riot as a direct tribute to Crimson Riot, the embodiment of his ideals. His ultimate goal is to become a strong hero who can protect others and face any danger without flinching.
In the story, Kirishima serves as a steadfast friend and a reliable combatant. He plays a crucial role in the arc where the villains kidnap his classmate Katsuki Bakugo. Due to the unique bond of respect he shares with Bakugo, Kirishima is deemed essential to the rescue mission, as he is the only student who can appeal to the explosive and volatile Bakugo without provoking him. He also undertakes a work-study program with the pro hero Fat Gum, where he continues to grow and develops new techniques.
His key relationships define much of his character development. His friendship with Katsuki Bakugo is the most notable; Kirishima is one of the few people who can tolerate Bakugo's abrasive personality and, in turn, has earned a measure of Bakugo's genuine respect. He is also very close with Denki Kaminari, with whom he often acts as a class mood-maker. He shares a friendly rivalry with Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu from Class 1-B, whose similar Quirk and hot-blooded nature make them natural rivals and, subsequently, good friends. He has known Mina Ashido since middle school, and he credits her brave actions as a major inspiration on his own path to becoming a hero.
Throughout the series, Kirishima undergoes significant development, transforming from an insecure boy who was ashamed of his own fear into a confident hero who embraces his role as a shield for others. He learns that true manliness is not the absence of fear, but the will to act in spite of it. This inner strength is physically manifested in his ultimate move, Red Riot Unbreakable, a state of extreme hardening that makes him nearly invulnerable for a short period but leaves him severely exhausted afterward.
Kirishima’s Quirk, named Hardening, allows him to rapidly harden any part of his body, turning his skin into a jagged, rock-like substance. This greatly increases his durability, making him resistant to blades, bullets, and powerful blunt-force impacts, as well as augmenting his striking power to break through walls and stone. While hardened, his mobility is somewhat decreased, and he can typically maintain this state for about ten minutes before his stamina begins to drain significantly. His fighting style is straightforward and aggressive, relying on his enhanced toughness to tank incoming hits while he closes in to deliver powerful counterattacks like the charging strike Red Gauntlet. His primary weakness is that his hardened form can be worn down by repeated, powerful impacts, such as a sustained barrage of Bakugo's explosions.
