Hailing from rural Izumo, Hiyori Suzumi moves alone to Tokyo to attend Sakuragaoka High School and pursue track and field. When her father sustains a back injury, financial necessity compels her to find part-time work to support herself and avoid burdening her family, who care for her younger siblings. This leads her to accept a secretive position as manager-in-training for the high school idol duo LIP×LIP—her classmates Yūjirō Someya and Aizō Shibasaki. The job requires concealing the idols' public personas and their mutual animosity.
Physically expressive, Hiyori is noted for her distinctive thick eyebrows and energetic body language. Her personality blends earnest determination with practicality; she prioritizes track aspirations and financial independence over typical high school interests like idols, initially expressing disinterest and later disdain towards LIP×LIP due to their behavior. Driven by the need to earn a living, she demonstrates resilience navigating job applications and interviews. Balancing track practice, academics, new friendships, and her demanding managerial role forms a central daily challenge.
Her development involves adapting to the idol industry's complexities and managing the duo's conflicting personalities. Though initially focused solely on the job's practical benefits, she gradually develops a sense of professional dedication despite her personal feelings. Interactions add interpersonal tension, including with LIP×LIP fan Chizuru Nakamura, who grows jealous of Hiyori's proximity to the idols. The reappearance of Nagisa Shiranami, a childhood friend and fellow track athlete from Izumo, introduces complications related to her past and potential romantic interests. Throughout, she maintains her core identity as an athlete and independent individual while learning to navigate professional responsibilities and personal relationships within the high-pressure environment.
