Description
Hitoshi Shinso is a student at U.A. High School, initially enrolled in the General Studies Department with the ambitious goal of transferring into the prestigious Hero Course. He is a young man of above-average height with a distinctive and somewhat tired appearance, characterized by messy, indigo hair that sticks out and triangular purple eyes with prominent dark circles underneath them.
Driven by a deep and long-held admiration for heroes, Shinso possesses a quiet, stoic, and intensely determined personality. Despite often appearing reserved or cynical, he is remarkably clever and possesses an innate ability to provoke conversation, a skill he utilizes strategically. His motivation to become a hero is fueled by a desire to prove wrong those who have doubted him, as he grew up hearing that his natural ability was better suited for a villain. This prejudice led him to feel discriminated against and to develop a certain resentment toward those with quirks more traditionally associated with heroism. However, rather than succumbing to bitterness, he channels these feelings into an unyielding resolve, openly admitting that once someone falls in love with the idea of being a hero, they cannot simply abandon it.
Shinso's role in the story is that of a determined underdog who challenges the system. He failed the Hero Course entrance exam because his quirk, Brainwashing, is ineffective against the combat robots used in the practical test. Undeterred, he enrolled in General Studies, aiming to prove his worth through events like the U.A. Sports Festival. A significant turning point occurs after his match against Izuku Midoriya, where his potential is recognized by the Pro Hero and U.A. teacher Shota Aizawa. Aizawa, noting the similarities in their quirks lacking raw combat power, becomes Shinso's mentor, training him in advanced combat techniques and the use of a capture weapon. This mentorship is a key relationship that facilitates his eventual transfer to the Hero Course.
Shinso experiences significant development from a frustrated and envious outsider to a respected hero student. His initial hostility and jealousy toward students in the Hero Course, particularly toward Midoriya whose powerful quirk he contrasts with his own, evolve into a grudging respect after their match. He later participates in joint training battles alongside Class 1-A and Class 1-B, demonstrating his growth, tactical value, and newly acquired skills. Through these efforts, he successfully achieves his goal and transfers into the Hero Course, a testament to his resilience and hard work.
Shinso's notable ability is his quirk, Brainwashing. This power allows him to take complete control over the body of anyone who verbally responds to him while he is actively using his quirk. The control can be broken if the victim receives a strong physical shock, and his voice must be heard directly, as using an electronic device like a megaphone will prevent the quirk from activating. To compensate for his quirk's weaknesses and his own initial lack of combat experience, Shinso uses specialized equipment. He wears a mask-like device called the Persona Code, or Artificial Vocal Cords, which allows him to change and mimic other people's voices, making it easier to trick opponents into responding. He also employs a capture weapon similar to his mentor Aizawa's, which he uses in close-quarters combat. His fighting style emphasizes psychological warfare and tactical support, using his quirk to control the flow of battle and create opportunities for his allies. Outside of his hero training, Shinso enjoys cycling and has an affinity for cats.
