Description
Itsuka Kendo is a student in the Hero Course at U.A. High School, specifically a member of Class 1-B where she serves as the class president. Known by her hero name, Battle Fist, Kendo is a tall young woman with striking orange hair that she almost always wears in a high ponytail on the left side of her head, a style that has become her trademark, and her eyes are a matching teal color. She has a healthy, athletic build that reflects her physical capabilities. Her hero costume is a practical turquoise, knee-length qipao, over which she wears a black double-breasted corset that ends just below her chest. She completes this outfit with short black pants underneath, a brown utility belt, a thin black domino mask, and distinctive navy blue boots. For colder weather, she switches to a long-sleeved version of the qipao.
Kendo's personality is one of her most defining features. She is best described as the big sister of Class 1-B, a title earned through her spirited, thoughtful, and highly dependable nature. She has a cheerful and outgoing demeanor that helps bring together her classmates, who are known for having a variety of strong and often challenging personalities. Unlike some of her peers, Kendo holds no genuine ill-will toward the rival Class 1-A and is often friendly and sympathetic towards them. She is quick to criticize anyone she feels is acting unfairly or rudely, which most famously manifests in her frequent use of a sharp karate chop to the back of the neck of her classmate, Neito Monoma, whenever he begins his obsessive taunting of Class 1-A. Beneath her responsible exterior, she appreciates straightforward and determined individuals, and she harbors her own competitive drive to prove her strength and the strength of her class. She enjoys black coffee and motorcycles, which are tastes often considered part of her down-to-earth, slightly tomboyish character.
Her primary motivation is to become a great hero while ensuring the success and cohesion of her own class. She feels a strong sense of responsibility as the class president, acting as a steady leader and a counterbalance to the more volatile members of 1-B. She is willing to pass up personal glory for the perceived benefit of her classmates, as shown during the U.A. Sports Festival when she voluntarily gave up her team's spot in the final tournament to another team from her class that she felt had fought harder. Kendo is deeply invested in closing the gap between Class 1-B and Class 1-A, believing that her class has just as much potential. She is not driven by Monoma's bitterness but by a genuine desire for her friends to succeed and be recognized. She also struggles with wanting to be acknowledged for her own merits, specifically disliking when she is grouped together with Momo Yaoyorozu of Class 1-A simply because they are both considered attractive and have appeared in commercials together. She respects Yaoyorozu's abilities and intellect but wants to be seen as her own person, not as part of a pair or a beauty standard.
Throughout the series, Kendo's role grows from a background classmate to a significant supporting character. She is first seen during the U.A. Sports Festival, where she demonstrates her fairness by giving up her team's advancement. Her most prominent early role is during the Forest Training Camp Arc, when the League of Villains attacks. While most students panic, Kendo remains calm and analytical. When a villain named Mustard fills the forest with a deadly knockout gas, she uses her intelligence to deduce his location by studying the gas's movement, figures out how to use her Quirk to create wind and clear the gas, and then partners with her classmate Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu to successfully defeat him. This event is a major turning point, showcasing her combat ability, tactical mind, and coolness under pressure. Later, during the Joint Training Battle between Class A and Class B, she is the leader of her team and faces off directly against Momo Yaoyorozu, leading her team to victory in a strategically complex match. This battle reinforces her role as the strategic and combative heart of her class.
Kendo’s key relationships are central to her character. Her most notable dynamic is with Neito Monoma, whom she constantly keeps in check with physical discipline, acting as the only person who can truly control his abrasive behavior. Despite this, she is still a loyal friend and classmate who works to keep him and others out of trouble. She has a close, friendly rivalry with Momo Yaoyorozu. While fellow students and fans often compare them, their interactions are respectful and competitive, with Kendo wanting to surpass Yaoyorozu on the strength of her own leadership and combat skills rather than just being her visual counterpart. She also shares a strong bond of mutual respect with Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu, having fought alongside him against Mustard, and she appreciates his straightforward, never-give-up attitude.
In terms of development, Kendo starts as a responsible class representative but is quickly established as one of the most competent first-year students, her entrance exam score ranking her fifth overall, a placement higher than many prominent Class 1-A students. Her experience in the forest camp solidifies her confidence as a fighter and strategist. By the time of the Joint Training arc, she has fully matured into a leader capable of setting complex plans into motion and directly clashing with one of U.A.'s most gifted students on equal footing. Her journey reflects a theme of proving that quiet leadership and tactical brilliance are just as valuable as flashy power.
Kendo's notable ability stems from her Quirk, which she calls Big Fist. This power allows her to enlarge both of her hands to a massive size at will. The enlargement dramatically increases the striking power, chopping strength, and gripping force of her hands, making her a formidable close-quarters combatant. She can use her giant hands to deliver devastating punches that can shatter metal, generate powerful gusts of wind to blow away enemies or hazards like gas, and restrain foes or rescue civilians by completely enclosing them in her enormous grip. Her signature technique is called Double Big Fist, where she rapidly expands her fists at the exact moment of impact to maximize the force of her blow. Beyond her Quirk, Kendo is exceptionally intelligent and analytical, able to quickly assess a battlefield, predict enemy movements, and formulate effective counter-strategies. Her natural physical strength is also remarkable; she has easily won an arm-wrestling match against Eijiro Kirishima, a Class 1-A student whose Quirk is specifically hardening his body, entirely without using her own Quirk. This combination of raw power, tactical genius, and a supportive yet firm personality makes Itsuka Kendo a truly outstanding and underestimated hero-in-training.
