Within the story, Haruta participates in the Kyoto Branch's offensive during the Impure King revival arc. When the rogue exorcist Saburota Todo appears on the scene, Haruta is among those who move to support Yukio Okumura in the ensuing battle. As part of a squad led by Juzo Shima, Haruta attacks Todo alongside another exorcist named Hajime Narumi. Their objective is to buy sufficient time for Juzo to launch a decisive attack, though both Haruta and Narumi are quickly defeated by Todo's superior combat skills.

Haruta maintains key working relationships within the Kyoto Branch, particularly with Juzo Shima, under whose command he directly serves, and with Hajime Narumi, with whom he fights alongside.
