Description
Monkey D. Luffy is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates and the central protagonist in the anime film One Piece Film Gold. Born in Foosha Village, he ate the Gum-Gum Fruit (later revealed as the mythical Human-Human Fruit, Model Nika) as a child, granting his entire body the properties of rubber. In the film, Luffy leads his crew to the independent entertainment city ship Gran Tesoro, drawn by the promise of adventure and fortune. His background as a pirate captain who dreams of becoming the Pirate King shapes his every action, but in this story the treasure is secondary to the safety of his friends.

Luffy’s personality in One Piece Film Gold matches his well-known traits: he is cheerful, carefree, and driven by a strong sense of freedom. He often thinks with his stomach and acts on impulse, yet he becomes intensely serious and focused when a friend is in danger or when he confronts injustice. His motivation throughout the film is to rescue his captured crewmate Roronoa Zoro, who is held for execution after Luffy loses a rigged gambling game orchestrated by the city’s ruler, Gild Tesoro. Luffy refuses to accept Tesoro’s cynical worldview that money and power control everything. Instead, he fights to prove that friendship and personal liberty cannot be bought or owned.

In the story, Luffy takes the lead role in orchestrating a heist to break into Tesoro’s vault and free Zoro. He splits the crew into teams, infiltrates the hotel, and, after being captured and thrown into the golden prison beneath the ship, works with Franky and the imprisoned gambler Raise Max to escape. He later uses his strength to directly confront Tesoro. Luffy’s arc centers on his rejection of materialism and his unwavering commitment to his crew, culminating in a climactic battle where he defeats Tesoro and shatters the illusion of the city’s glittering control.

Key relationships in the film include his crew—especially Zoro, whose capture drives the plot—and Carina, a former rival of Nami who temporarily allies with the Straw Hats. Luffy also shares a brief but significant connection with his sworn brother Sabo, who appears during the climax to intercept Marine forces (including Rob Lucci) and ensure Luffy can face Tesoro without interference. The primary antagonist, Gild Tesoro, represents everything Luffy opposes: greed, manipulation, and the belief that wealth is supreme power.

Luffy shows some development in the film by reinforcing his core values. He does not change fundamentally but demonstrates growth in his ability to inspire others—like the enslaved citizens of Gran Tesoro—to rise up against oppression. His unwavering optimism and trust in his friends enable the successful revolt.

In terms of notable abilities, Luffy uses his rubber body for various combat techniques throughout the film. He employs Gum-Gum attacks such as the Gum-Gum Pistol and Gum-Gum Rocket to move and fight. When facing Tesoro’s giant gold golem, Luffy activates Gear Fourth, a transformation that inflates his muscles and grants him immense power, speed, and resilience. This form allows him to penetrate Tesoro’s defenses and ultimately defeat him, demonstrating Luffy’s capacity to push beyond his limits when protecting his crew.
