Description
Hiyoko Saionji is a student of Hope's Peak Academy's Class 77-B, possessing the title of the Ultimate Traditional Dancer. Her upbringing was far from ordinary. As the heiress to the prestigious Saionji clan, which heads a school of traditional Japanese dance, she was subjected to a harsh and dangerous childhood. Her family was frequently targeted by conspiracies and jealous rivals, leading to life-threatening pranks such as pins in her shoes, dead animals in her bed, and poisoned food. Amidst this turmoil, she formed a strong bond with her father, whom she viewed as a protective and supportive figure who cherished her dancing, in stark contrast to her mother, whom she dismissed as talentless. Her grandmother eventually took her from her parents to raise her according to the family's rigid traditions, a period Hiyoko resented but also acknowledged as formative.
Hiyoko has a deceptively youthful and fragile appearance, with blonde hair typically tied up, and a small, slender stature. This cute exterior, however, masks an extremely cruel and malicious personality. She is sharp-tongued, openly contemptuous of those she perceives as weaker than herself, and believes the world consists of a chosen noble class like herself and everyone else as slaves. This cruel behavior is largely a defense mechanism developed from a lifetime of betrayal and assassination attempts, where trusting others proved dangerous. Despite her abrasive nature, she holds a deep appreciation for tradition and Japanese cultural arts, though this manifests as a nationalistic pride that dismisses other cultures.
Her primary motivation in daily school life is simply to enjoy herself, often at the expense of others. She derives amusement from tormenting her classmates, particularly the meek and accident-prone Mikan Tsumiki, whom she uses as a verbal punching bag. However, beneath this hostile exterior lies a latent desire for genuine connection, a need that is fulfilled primarily through one person: Mahiru Koizumi, the Ultimate Photographer. From their first meeting, Hiyoko showed Mahiru a kindness she extended to no one else, developing a deep and dependent friendship with her. She calls Mahiru "big sis" and relies on her for practical help, such as dressing her elaborate kimono, which she cannot put on by herself. Her behavior towards the rest of her class ranges from amused irritation to active participation in pranks, such as spiking a dish with an aphrodisiac to create chaos.
Hiyoko's role in the story of Danganronpa 3: Despair Arc is to illustrate the fragile happiness of Class 77-B before their fall into despair. She is initially shown as a reluctant participant in class activities, often dragged along by Mahiru or their homeroom teacher, Chisa Yukizome. Despite her protests, she gradually begins to tolerate, and even subtly enjoy, the companionship of her classmates. A key event that impacts her is the Twilight Syndrome Murder Case, where she and her friends discover the body of Natsumi Kuzuryu, leading to a chain of events that devastates Mahiru, whom Hiyoko comforts. This experience cements her loyalty to her friend. Her personality shows slight development over time, experiencing a growth spurt while retaining her mischievous nature, and even showing moments of concern when Mikan goes missing, demonstrating a growing, if still twisted, attachment to her peers.
Her ultimate development is tragic. When the class is lured into a trap by Junko Enoshima, Hiyoko and her classmates are forced to witness the brutal execution of their class representative, Chiaki Nanami. This event, combined with Junko's brainwashing techniques, completely shatters her psyche. Hiyoko is successfully corrupted into becoming a member of the Ultimate Despair, a Remnant of Despair who helps plunge the world into catastrophe. In this state, she uses her traditional dance to "spread joy" in a twisted, despair-inducing manner and even participates in concerts to rally the army of despair. As an Ultimate Despair, she and her classmates have the bodies of the deceased Junko Enoshima grafted onto themselves, though which specific parts Hiyoko took remains unknown.
Her notable abilities are centered on her talent as the Ultimate Traditional Dancer. She is a highly skilled and renowned performer, a rising star in the Japanese dance world who has held numerous shows overseas and is popular with audiences, particularly younger males. Her dance is not just an art form but becomes a tool for spreading despair after her brainwashing. Despite her childish demeanor, she possesses a resilient, if aggressive, will to survive, a direct result of the dangerous environment she was raised in.
