Description
Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu is introduced as a student of Class 77-B at Hope's Peak Academy, where he holds the title of the Ultimate Yakuza as the heir to the country's largest crime syndicate, the Kuzuryu Clan. In Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School: Despair Arc, he is shown during his time at the school before the events of the Tragedy that plunges the world into chaos.
Fuyuhiko is a slim young man with a refined, almost baby-faced appearance, which is a source of personal insecurity for him. He has dusty blond crew-cut hair, gold eyes, freckles across the bridge of his nose, and a permanent blush on his cheeks. During the Despair Arc, he wears the standard uniform of Hope's Peak Academy as a second-year student.
In terms of personality, Fuyuhiko is initially presented as standoffish, irritable, and easily angered, often using aggressive and threatening language to assert his toughness and compensate for his short stature and youthful looks. He dislikes being too familiar with others and keeps a certain distance from his classmates, claiming that forming friendships is beneath him. However, this demeanor is shown to be a front; beneath it, he is someone who takes honor and moral codes very seriously. He is strictly against behaviors like underage drinking or sexual harassment, and he is one of the few students who regularly attends class despite it not being mandatory. For instance, when an aphrodisiac affects his classmates, he desperately tries to prevent Kazuichi Soda from taking advantage of Sonia Nevermind, demonstrating his strong sense of personal integrity. Despite his prickly exterior, he has a somewhat pure heart and a secret fondness for sweets, which he considers unmanly.
Fuyuhiko's primary motivation in the Despair Arc is tied to his family and his position within the yakuza. He struggles with the weight of his legacy, feeling he does not deserve his title and wishing to become strong on his own merits rather than relying on his family's power. His personal life becomes a central focus of his role in the story, particularly concerning his younger sister, Natsumi Kuzuryu. When Natsumi is accepted into the Reserve Course and later murdered, Fuyuhiko is consumed by grief and rage, which distracts him from his school life and sets him on a dark path of revenge. This event is a crucial part of his character arc in the series.
His most significant relationship is with his classmate and lifelong companion, Peko Pekoyama, the Ultimate Swordswoman. Raised together since birth within the Kuzuryu Clan, Peko serves as his personal hitman and bodyguard, viewing herself as nothing more than his tool. Fuyuhiko, however, deeply cares for her as a person and rejects this dehumanizing dynamic, wishing she would be herself. Their bond is complex and close, with Fuyuhiko often trying to protect her from getting involved in dangerous situations, even as he relies on her support. Other key relationships include his interactions with his homeroom teacher, Chisa Yukizome, whose determination and resolve he comes to respect, and his classmates like Mahiru Koizumi and Kazuichi Soda, with whom he has frequent but telling disagreements.
Within the story of the Despair Arc, Fuyuhiko serves as one of the key members of Class 77-B. He is present for the daily school life and the growing tensions both within the school and with the outside world. His arc follows his struggle with his sister's death, his distancing from Peko in an attempt to protect her from his revenge scheme, and his eventual succumbing to despair. Along with the rest of his class, he is ultimately brainwashed by Junko Enoshima, becoming a member of Ultimate Despair and participating in the catastrophic events that follow, including the slaughter within the Japanese Diet Building. His development in this prequel arc sets the stage for his later redemption in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair.
Notable abilities associated with Fuyuhiko stem directly from his upbringing as the heir to the Kuzuryu Clan. While his specific combat skills are less emphasized than his strategic mind, his true ability lies in his authority and knowledge of the underworld. He can command the respect and resources of a major crime family, which includes employing a personal hitman like Peko Pekoyama. His potential for ruthlessness is also showcased, as he personally kills the murderer of his sister, Sato, in a deliberate act of vengeance.
