Description
Kazuichi Soda is a student of Class 77-B at Hope's Peak Academy, where he holds the title of the Ultimate Mechanic. His background is marked by economic hardship and personal struggle. His family's bicycle repair shop went bankrupt, leaving them in poverty, and his father, who struggled with alcohol addiction, would mistreat him. To protect himself from bullying and to appear tougher, he deliberately adopted a punk-inspired appearance, dyeing his hair bright pink and sharpening his teeth into a shark-like grin. This defensiveness stems from a deep-seated distrust born of past betrayals by those he considered friends. His exceptional mechanical skills earned him his place at the prestigious academy, which brought much-needed financial relief to his family.

In terms of personality, Kazuichi presents a stark contrast between his intimidating look and his true nature. He is highly emotional, jumpy, and fundamentally cowardly, often panicking or screaming in fear at minor incidents. He is a poor liar, frequently blurts out his thoughts without thinking, and is often the target of jokes or bullying from others. Despite trying to act smooth and carefree, his nervous and compulsive behavior usually betrays him. He carries a wrench with him at all times and grows anxious when he cannot tinker with machinery, demonstrating a deep, genuine love for his craft, particularly fast vehicles like rockets and motorcycles, which is ironic given his terrible motion sickness.

Kazuichi’s primary motivation and central character trait in the Despair Arc is his obsessive and unrequited crush on his classmate, Sonia Nevermind. He is completely fixated on her, dreaming of a beautiful blonde girlfriend since childhood, leading him to behave in perverted and stalker-ish ways, such as spying on her and attempting to intrude on private events like a girls-only beach trip. His infatuation makes him deeply envious of any male who attracts Sonia’s attention, especially Gundham Tanaka. While he often performs helpful deeds, his motivations are frequently tainted, as he does them primarily to impress Sonia rather than out of pure altruism.

Within the story of the Despair Arc, Kazuichi serves as a member of the ensemble cast of Class 77-B, showing how the class bonded before falling into despair. He is portrayed as playing the straight man among his group of eccentric classmates. He is shown to be friends with Teruteru Hanamura, with whom he shares a perverted sense of humor, and he also forms a close and surprisingly trusting friendship with Hajime Hinata, eventually regarding him as a soul friend. His role becomes critical as the class is targeted by Junko Enoshima. Ultimately, his will is broken, and he is forced into despair after being forced to witness the execution of Chiaki Nanami via a brainwashing video.

As a member of the Ultimate Despair, Kazuichi participated in global atrocities, showing complete ruthlessness, though his obsessive fixation on Sonia remained. However, his development concludes with a chance at redemption. After the events of the game Danganronpa 2, he and his surviving classmates wake from a coma with their memories restored. Accepting responsibility for their actions, they choose to live in exile on Jabberwock Island. In the final arc, he and his class intervene to stop Ryota Mitarai’s brainwashing broadcast, protecting the Future Foundation before voluntarily returning to their island prison. In this self-imposed exile, he returns to his mechanical work, dreaming of one day building a spaceship.
