Description
Hannah England is a student at Luna Nova Magical Academy, where she is a constant companion of the top-performing witch, Diana Cavendish, and her frequent partner, Barbara Parker. She and Barbara share a dormitory with Diana, forming an inseparable trio that navigates the academy together. Hannah, a girl of average stature, is recognized by her wavy auburn hair, which she keeps tied in a ponytail with a distinct yellow ribbon. Her hazel eyes often carry a firm expression, and she has somewhat thick eyebrows.
In her early days at the academy, Hannah presents as a mocking and somewhat arrogant individual. She takes a particular delight in belittling Atsuko Kagari, often called Akko, and her friends, due to their perceived incompetence with magic and lower academic standing. Her speech is notably casual, contrasting with Barbara's more polite manner of speaking. This behavior stems from a belief in the superiority of traditional magical lineage and academic prowess. However, beneath this smug exterior lies a fearful side. Hannah and Barbara are easily frightened by monsters and dangerous situations, much to Diana's occasional chagrin, as Diana believes witches should be the ones to inspire fear, not the other way around.
Hannah's primary motivation is her loyalty to Diana Cavendish, which serves as the central axis of her actions. She seeks to be close to Diana, support her endeavors, and bask in her reflected glory. This loyalty, while sycophantic at first, proves to be genuine. She is shown to be disapproving of Barbara's secret love for the Night Fall novels, finding the series stupid.
Within the story, Hannah primarily functions as an antagonist to Akko and her friends, representing the traditional and elitist student body that dismisses Akko's dreams. Her role is often to provide obstacles, such as in the broom relay race, where she and Barbara use magic to transform Akko's broom into a shoddy cart out of mockery. She and Barbara are also quick to report Akko and her friends to Professor Finnelan for rule-breaking, like attending a Night Fall event in the city. Her story also involves her relationship with Diana, notably when Diana temporarily leaves the academy, at which point Hannah finds herself competing with Barbara for the position of top student.
Her key relationships define her character arc. Her relationship with Barbara is one of constant companionship, though initially marked by Hannah's teasing and judgment, particularly over Barbara's interests. Her relationship with Diana evolves from that of a fearful sycophant to a more genuine friend who is devastated by Diana's departure. Her relationship with Akko undergoes the most significant change, starting with intense mockery, progressing to uneasy gratitude after Akko helps convince Diana to return to Luna Nova, and eventually developing into a genuine, if understated, friendship by the end of the series.
Hannah experiences a notable development over the course of the narrative. She begins as a one-dimensional bully but is gradually revealed to have depth, including her own fears and capacity for genuine loyalty. The event where she and Barbara thank Akko for helping Diana marks a turning point, as it shows humility and a recognition of someone they previously dismissed as incompetent. By the final episodes, she and Barbara have fully integrated as friends with Akko's circle, shedding their earlier antagonistic role.
As a witch, Hannah possesses standard magical abilities typical of a Luna Nova student. She has a magic wand, which she uses to cast spells. In the first short film, she uses a lightning spell to attack the Ancient Dragon. She also owns a magical stopwatch, which features a small fairy-like construct that moves its hands. In other adaptations, such as the manga, she demonstrates the ability to manipulate the trajectory of a ball in a volleyball game and conjures a chain with a shackle to capture a rabbit.
