TV-Series
Description
Gou Asahi, also known as Go Asahi, is a secondary character in Mob Psycho 100. He is a thirteen-year-old male with short, spiky blonde hair and large, half-lidded black eyes. Standing 151 centimeters tall and weighing 43.3 kilograms, he is typically seen wearing a light blue hoodie with grey tassels, which features a flame emblem on the back and a smaller one on the left side of the chest, paired with dark blue trousers and white penny loafers.
Gou is an esper who was discovered by Kenji Mitsuura and brought to the Awakening Lab, a facility designed to help individuals with latent psychic potential develop their abilities. He chose to stay at the lab specifically to learn how to amplify his powers, which manifest as pyrokinesis, the ability to generate and control fire. Despite his self-proclaimed title as the child of all-consuming flames, his initial abilities are extremely limited. At the start of the series, he can only produce a small spark on his fingertip for a brief moment, similar to a cigarette lighter, and with considerable effort, he can heat a spoon enough to warp it.
His personality is marked by a contradiction between the image he projects and his true nature. He often attempts to act cool, cold, and distant, but this demeanor is largely a facade, as he is not actually as detached or aloof as he pretends to be. This pretense is a significant part of how he presents himself to others, and he is frequently seen in the company of his friend and fellow esper, Takeshi Hoshino.
Gou's role in the story primarily revolves around his time at the Awakening Lab. He is among the group of young espers who are introduced to Ritsu Kageyama during a tour of the facility, where his weak fire-starting ability fails to impress. His situation becomes more perilous when the terrorist organization known as Claw attacks the lab, capturing Gou and his friends with the intention of brainwashing them into becoming psychic soldiers. They are eventually able to escape thanks to the intervention of Ritsu Kageyama and Arataka Reigen.
Following the Claw incident, Gou undergoes significant development and training. He begins training under the guidance of the powerful esper Teruki Hanazawa, who becomes a teacher at the Awakening Lab. Through this rigorous training, Gou achieves a notable breakthrough. He learns to amplify his flames to the level of a flamethrower and masters a technique he calls Flamethrower. His growth also enables him to perform combination attacks. During a battle against the Scars, he works alongside Takeshi Hoshino; by adding his flamethrower to the dust storm Hoshino creates with his telekinesis, they demonstrate a cooperative technique known as the Psychic Fire Pillar. While his power increases considerably under Teruki's tutelage, it remains relatively weak in comparison to the most powerful espers in the series.
