Description
In the anime Ninja Girl & Samurai Master, Hideyoshi, often called by the nickname Saru, or Monkey, is a young and earnest retainer in the service of the warlord Oda Nobunaga. As a low-ranking but ambitious soldier, his role within the Oda clan is frequently that of an errand boy, a position that often places him at the center of the show's comedic misunderstandings and mishaps.
Hideyoshi is characterized by his unshakable loyalty and a persistently upbeat, if somewhat dense, personality. He is well-meaning and hardworking, but his naivete, particularly in matters of the heart, is a defining trait. This obliviousness is most evident in his relationship with Nene, a childhood friend who is clearly in love with him. Hideyoshi remains completely unaware of her tsundere advances, which usually manifest as violent outbursts or angry denials of her feelings for him, and he often interprets her care as simple friendliness or a love for household chores. His own stated affection is directed toward Nobunaga's younger sister, Oichi, a fruitless and idealized crush that further fuels Nene's frustration and the comedic tension between them.
Despite his comedic shortcomings, Hideyoshi is deeply motivated by a desire to serve Nobunaga and to rise through the ranks of the clan. He is eager to prove his worth, even going so far as to persistently ask the skilled ninja Chidori to teach him ninja techniques. As the story progresses, his capabilities extend beyond simple tasks. He is entrusted with significant responsibilities, such as the construction of Sunomata Castle, a key strategic move for the Oda clan, and later plays a crucial role in convincing the brilliant strategist Takenaka Hanbee to join their forces, an act that directly contributes to his own growing stature. These events mark his development from a simple errand boy into a more prominent and capable military commander.
Hideyoshi’s key relationships form the core of his character. His dynamic with Nene is a central running gag, evolving from mutual misunderstanding into a genuine, albeit chaotic, bond that eventually leads to marriage. His relationship with his lord, Nobunaga, is one of deep admiration and loyalty; he is distressed at the thought of having worried his master and eagerly follows his often unorthodox orders. He also shares a friendly, if sometimes exasperated, rapport with the ninja Chidori and her partner Sukezo, who often act as witnesses to his clumsy interactions with Nene. His primary notable ability is not martial prowess but an optimistic and persistent nature, combined with a surprising talent for logistics and leadership when the situation demands it, such as rallying men to build a castle under enemy fire.
