TV-Series
Description
Oichi is a recurring supporting character in the anime and is the younger sister of Oda Nobunaga. She is depicted as a beautiful young noblewoman who is shy, gentle, and somewhat naive, having been raised in a sheltered environment within the Oda household. Her brother is deeply fond of her and dotes on her, and she is admired by many of the Oda retainers, including Kinoshita Hideyoshi and Shibata Katsuie, who view her almost as an idol. Her charm has a similar effect on the Azai retainers after she marries into their clan.

As part of Nobunaga's political strategy, Oichi is married to Azai Nagamasa, the head of the Azai clan, in order to secure an alliance between the two families. She settles into her new life and the couple is shown to live together harmoniously, eventually raising children, including a daughter who closely resembles her. Her place in the story is tied to the personal cost of the political alliances of the era. When the alliance between the Oda and Azai clans breaks apart and Nagamasa turns against Nobunaga, Oichi is caught between loyalty to her brother and affection for her husband. An episode in the second season centers on a dispute over her, in which Nobunaga sends a diplomat to bring her back to the Oda clan amid the conflict.

Her personality centers on gentleness and inexperience with the wider world, and she does not take part in the military conflicts or ninja exploits that drive the series. Her importance comes from her emotional significance to those around her: she serves as a source of unity and admiration among the retainers, reveals the more personal side of Nobunaga, and represents the human consequences of the rivalries between clans. Across the story, she develops from a sheltered maiden into a woman forced to navigate the painful division between the two houses she belongs to, giving her arc a more serious tone within the series' largely comedic setting.

Oichi does not possess notable combat abilities or any special skills of her own. Her defining qualities are her beauty, her warm and gentle nature, and the effect she has on the people around her, and her role is to give the political maneuvering of the period a personal and emotional dimension.
