Description
Chidori is a young kunoichi from the Iga clan who serves as a primary character in the comedic historical narrative. Her unwavering dedication to the warlord Oda Nobunaga originates from a childhood incident when he rescued her from drowning in a river. At that moment, she learned of his grand ambition to unify the war-torn land of Japan, an ideal that gave her purpose after she lost her parents to the ongoing conflicts. Years later, after honing her ninja skills, Chidori and her fellow shinobi, Sukezo, are sent to the Oda household, where she proudly becomes Nobunaga's retainer, wearing a ribbon he gave her as a token of their first meeting.
In terms of personality, Chidori is marked by a stark contrast between her lethal competence and her endearingly clumsy nature. She possesses a cheerful and innocent demeanor, often appearing much younger than her actual age, which is around sixteen or seventeen. However, she is frequently described as an "Idiot Hero" due to her significant academic struggles; she has difficulty with basic arithmetic and often misses the point of strategic conversations. Her attempts to remember critical information lead her to use a self-injurious technique called the "Art of Long-Term Memory," where she scars herself to recall facts, a practice that often backfires or causes more harm than good. Despite her lack of book smarts, her emotional intelligence and pure heart make her a beloved and integral member of Nobunaga's forces.
Chidori’s primary motivation is to see Nobunaga’s dream of a unified Japan come true, as she believes this is the only way to end the suffering caused by constant warfare. This deep sense of loyalty drives every action she takes, from small chores to dangerous assassinations. While she is cheerful and devoted, she is not blind to the moral weight of her duties. As a shinobi who operates in the shadows, she has taken many lives for the sake of her lord’s goal, and she carries a sense of guilt regarding this violence.
Within the story, Chidori acts as Nobunaga’s secret weapon and primary agent of espionage. Despite her small stature, she is an exceptional fighter who can easily dispatch groups of enemy soldiers and has defeated elite warriors, such as a leading shinobi from the Koga clan. Her role extends beyond simple combat; she is also instrumental in diplomatic missions, using her honest and persuasive nature to win political figures over to Nobunaga’s side. However, she is bound by the historical reality that a shinobi cannot take public credit, so her heroic deeds often go unrecorded, witnessed only by a few like the chronicler Ota Gyuichi.
Key relationships heavily define her story. Her relationship with Nobunaga is the central axis; she is utterly loyal to him, and he, in turn, remembers the girl he saved and trusts her with vital tasks. She shares a close partnership with Sukezo, who is not only her comrade in arms but also harbors a deep romantic affection for her. Chidori remains completely oblivious to his feelings, cheerfully calling him "Suke-chan" and viewing him strictly as a friend. This creates a comedic unrequited love dynamic. She also forms bonds with other members of the Oda household, including Nobunaga’s wife Kicho and his sister Oichi. Her friendship with Oichi becomes particularly poignant, as she witnesses the political necessity of Oichi’s marriage to a rival clan leader, which tests Chidori’s emotional resilience.
Chidori undergoes notable development, particularly as the political landscape grows more complex. Initially a purely enthusiastic and capable operative, she is forced to confront the harsh realities of war when allegiances shift. The Battle of Anegawa is a turning point for her, as it forces Nobunaga to fight against the husband of his sister, Oichi. This conflict highlights the personal costs of unification, pushing Chidori to grapple with the pain of seeing "brothers fight brothers." These experiences lead to an emotional awakening where she must reconcile her duty to Nobunaga with the tragic consequences of his ambition. Additionally, she possesses a persistent fear of water stemming from her near-drowning as a child, a weakness she struggles to overcome despite her otherwise fearless nature, though she eventually plays a key role in a naval battle.
Regarding abilities, Chidori is highly skilled in traditional ninja arts. She is a master of stealth, espionage, and assassination, frequently infiltrating enemy castles. In direct combat, she is proficient at dual wielding swords and throwing kunai. She is also known to use inventions from Sukezo, such as modified smoke bombs. While physically formidable, her greatest weakness, aside from her naivety, is her inability to kill someone after she has befriended them, a moral limit that sometimes complicates her missions.
