Description
Aleksandra Ivanovna Pokryshkin, often called Sasha by her friends, is the combat officer of the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing and holds the rank of Captain in the Orussian Army, where she is recognized as the nation's top flying ace. She is the daughter of an engineer, and this early exposure to mechanics fostered in her a deep understanding of machinery, to the point where she possesses what could be called a "mecha fetish." This background makes her technical and repair skills exceptionally high, a talent she regularly puts to use maintaining the squadron's equipment.
Sasha has a structured and perfectionist personality, which often puts her at odds with the more carefree or reckless members of her unit. Her pragmatic and organized nature serves as a counterbalance to the impulsive actions of witches like Waltrud Krupinski and the frequent carelessness of Nikka Edvardine Katajainen. Despite the frustration of constantly having to repair damaged Striker Units, particularly Nikka's, this responsibility has forged a close, caretaker-like bond between them. This relationship reveals a sweeter, more protective side to her character, such as when she secretly placed a "good luck" charm on Nikka's Striker Unit, which ultimately helped save her life.
Sasha's role in the story is multifaceted. As the combat commander of the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing, she is responsible for leading frontline defense operations in Karlsland and other European sectors. Her duties are complicated by a chronic shortage of equipment and a high attrition rate for Striker Units, caused by the unit's intense combat sorties and the "vigorous fighting spirit" of its members. Beyond her command, she is also a valued combat instructor, having systematized her tactical experiences from the evacuations of Karlsland and Orussia into a textbook that was widely adopted by Orussian forces. She is enthusiastic about sharing information and tactics between different units.
A key part of her development involves her unique magical ability, known as Image Memorization. This power allows her to perfectly recall any information or experience she actively uses her magic to witness, from complex technical plans to minute details of past events. It is a form of memory far more precise than a standard photographic memory. While this ability is invaluable for strategic planning and the repair of complex machinery, Sasha initially uses it primarily for maintenance duties. A significant moment in her personal growth occurs when she confronts a traumatic childhood memory of visiting her grandmother in Petersburg. To avoid being marginalized as a witch, she had used her magic for the first time and then subconsciously sealed the entire memory away. Recovering these lost memories during a mission not only helps her destroy a Neuroi but also represents her coming to terms with her identity and past. Her familiar is a polar bear, and she has flown a variety of Striker Units, including a brown-camouflaged MiG-60 and a prototype MiG i-225, and is known to carry a DP-28 light machine gun as her weapon.
