Description
Grigori Rasputin in the anime Drifters is a character based on the infamous Russian mystic from the era of Tsar Nicholas II. In his historical life, he was a peasant and mystic who gained considerable influence at the imperial court due to his perceived ability to heal the Tsar's hemophiliac son, Alexei. His assassination in 1916 was famously dramatic, as legends claim he survived multiple attempts on his life, including poisoning and gunshots, before finally being killed. In the world of Drifters, he is taken from this point in history and finds himself in a new, fantastical reality, where he aligns with the faction known as the Ends, serving as a key subordinate to their enigmatic leader, the Black King.

Rasputin presents a calm and collected demeanor, almost never seen without a faint, unnerving smile or a look of cool composure. He is a highly intelligent and erudite individual, acting as a primary strategist and the principal architect of the Black King's grand vision. Despite his background as a historical figure from a pre-industrial era, he demonstrates a remarkable capacity for large-scale societal engineering. He is not a frontline combatant; in fact, he seems to personally dislike engaging in direct physical conflict, preferring to wield his influence through his intellect and supernatural abilities from behind the scenes. His loyalty to the Black King appears absolute, and he serves not just as a servant but as the ruler's most trusted right-hand man, relied upon to execute crucial, complex tasks that no other can perform.

His primary motivation is the successful realization of the Black King's goal: to create a new global civilization for non-human races at the expense of humanity. Rasputin dedicates himself to this cause with zeal. He is shown teaching legions of monsters the Latin alphabet and developing a unified written language for them, aiming to foster a sense of community and advancement among the Black King's diverse and feral forces. He also works to create a common religion, symbolized by an eye, to further unify them, always careful to direct worship not toward the Black King himself but toward the power and influence he represents.

Rasputin's role in the story is that of a master manipulator, a puppet master, and a foundational pillar for the antagonist faction. He is often seen standing behind the Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanova, a historical acquaintance and fellow End, and the two share a close and trusted relationship. Alongside the fellow strategist Toshizo Hijikata, Rasputin forms part of the Black King's inner circle of advisors, with whom he works in close coordination. He also acknowledges the Count of Saint-Germi as a rival in political maneuvering, suggesting a complex dynamic even amongst the Ends. His strategic contributions are immense, ranging from attempting to subvert the Orte Empire through hypnotic manipulation of its nobles to devising long-term plans for the Ends' conquest. He also has a darkly pragmatic side, instructing soldiers that human beings are not to be wasted but to be fully utilized as resources for food, clothing, and other materials, highlighting the Ends' dehumanizing philosophy.

Throughout the narrative, Rasputin demonstrates a willingness to adapt and learn, but his most significant development is revealed through his failures. His sophisticated plan to seize the Orte Empire through cunning and spellcraft is completely thwarted by the more direct, unpredictable actions of the Drifters, leading to a rare moment of humiliation and rage as his intricate plot collapses. This event reveals that for all his genius, he can be outmaneuvered by forces that do not conform to calculated schemes. Nevertheless, he remains a pivotal figure, his faith in the Black King seemingly unshaken.

Rasputin's most notable ability is a form of long-range mind control, which allows him to affect individuals from a great distance. This power requires the use of a magical circle and intense concentration, and it effectively allows him to turn enemy soldiers into obedient puppets, sowing chaos and discord on the battlefield. Beyond this, his capabilities are more intellectual and systemic. He is a skilled hypnotist, a capable mage who can project his presence like a phantom, and a master of psychological manipulation, but his primary strength lies in his genius for organisation, cultural engineering, and grand strategy. He is the architect of a new world, using his mind as his most potent weapon.
