Description
Mari Katsuki is a supporting character in the anime Yuri!!! on Ice. She is the daughter of Toshiya Katsuki and Hiroko Katsuki and the older sister of the protagonist, Yuuri Katsuki. At thirty years old, she works alongside her family at their traditional hot springs inn, Yu-topia Katsuki, located in their hometown of Hasetsu. Her primary role within the story is to assist in running the family business, providing a stable and familiar backdrop for her brother’s journey.
Mari presents a relaxed and easygoing personality, often appearing aloof or casually detached from the more dramatic events surrounding her brother’s competitive skating career. Despite this laid-back demeanor, she is quietly supportive of Yuuri’s dreams, cheering him on from the sidelines without excessive fuss. She is also the only member of her family shown to smoke occasionally. Her sense of humor is dry, and she becomes notably animated when Yuri Plisetsky, the young Russian skater, first arrives at Yu-topia. Because he resembles a member of a boyband she likes, she gives him the nickname Yurio to distinguish him from her brother; the name sticks throughout the series.
Mari’s motivation centers on her commitment to her family and their hot springs establishment. She does not seek personal glory or involvement in the world of figure skating beyond what touches her family. Her development is subtle: she transitions from a somewhat distant sibling to a more openly proud sister as Yuuri gains confidence and success, but her fundamental character remains steady.
Key relationships include her bond with Yuuri, which is affectionate yet understated, and her interactions with her parents, Toshiya and Hiroko. She also forms a brief but memorable connection with Yuri Plisetsky, whom she treats with a blend of amusement and familiarity. Mari does not possess any notable figure skating abilities nor does she take part in competitions. Her strength lies in her down-to-earth presence, providing a sense of normalcy and grounding for her brother amid the high-pressure world of international ice skating.
