Description
Yuuko Nishigori is a childhood friend of Yuuri Katsuki and his former rinkmate at Ice Castle Hasetsu, the local skating rink in the town of Hasetsu. She later married Takeshi Nishigori, who was also a childhood friend and former skating companion of Yuuri, and the couple have triplets named Axel, Lutz, and Loop, names that directly reference figure skating jumps. Yuuko works as a coach at Ice Castle Hasetsu, balancing her responsibilities as a mother and instructor. Her background as a skater gives her a deep understanding of the sport, and she was known during her youth by the nickname Madonna because of her early talent.

Yuuko has a warm and extremely bubbly personality. She is openly enthusiastic and energetic, especially when it comes to figure skating, and she is a passionate longtime fan of Victor Nikiforov. Her friendly and approachable nature allows her to connect easily with both local skaters and visiting international competitors. She is also highly supportive; during childhood, she stood up for Yuuri when Takeshi teased him about being overweight, and as an adult, she continues to encourage Yuuri and other skaters, including Yuri Plisetsky, to do their best. Her motivation stems from a genuine love for skating and a strong sense of nostalgia for her own days on the ice with Yuuri. She takes great joy in seeing others, especially Yuuri, pursue their dreams.

In the story, Yuuko serves as a grounding figure from Yuuri’s past and a constant presence at his home rink. She is one of the first people Yuuri sees upon returning to Hasetsu after a disappointing Grand Prix Final, and she readily allows him access to the rink after hours, rekindling his connection to skating. Her role is that of a supportive anchor who provides encouragement and practical assistance, helping to maintain the atmosphere at Ice Castle Hasetsu. Her key relationships include her deep bond with Yuuri, her marriage to Takeshi, and her role as mother to the triplets. Through her interactions, Yuuko also develops a friendly rapport with Victor and Yuri Plisetsky, welcoming them into the rink’s community. Her notable abilities are primarily her coaching skills and her deep knowledge of figure skating, alongside her talent for making people feel at ease. While Yuuko does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation over the course of the series, her steady encouragement and unwavering belief in Yuuri contribute to his journey of self‑discovery and return to competitive skating.
