Description
Mari Katsuki is the older sister of Yuuri Katsuki, the main protagonist of Yuri!!! on Ice. She is the daughter of Toshiya and Hiroko Katsuki and works at the family’s hot spring inn, Yu-topia Katsuki, located in the town of Hasetsu. At thirty years old, Mari is a tall woman with short brown hair and brown eyes. She is the only character in the series shown smoking, a habit that adds to her relaxed, slightly rough-around-the-edges demeanor.

Mari’s personality is laid-back and low-key. She usually interacts with others only when necessary, preferring to stay in the background and observe. Despite this easygoing exterior, she is quietly supportive of her younger brother. When Yuuri returns home after a disappointing skating season, Mari is the one who asks him directly about his plans for the future, including whether he intends to continue skating. Her blunt, no-nonsense approach shows that she cares but does not coddle him.

Her role in the story is that of a supporting family member. She provides a grounding presence at the Katsuki household and represents Yuuri’s life outside the competitive skating world. Mari also takes on a lighthearted role when Yuri Plisetsky visits Japan: she nicknames him Yurio because he resembles a member of a boyband she likes, a name that sticks throughout the series. This moment highlights her playful side and her ability to cut through tension with humor.

Mari’s key relationships are with her family, especially Yuuri. She shares easy sibling banter with him and shows her support by letting him pursue his skating career without pressure, even when he struggles. She also becomes an enthusiastic fan of Yuri Plisetsky, reacting with clear excitement whenever he appears, though this is more of a pop-culture fandom than a personal bond.

In terms of development, Mari remains a consistent presence rather than undergoing a dramatic arc. She is a static character whose main evolution is in becoming more openly proud of Yuuri as he gains confidence and success. Her notable abilities are not athletic or technical; instead, they lie in her practicality and her knack for creating a comfortable, unpretentious atmosphere at the family inn, where skaters and coaches often stay during competitions. Her straightforwardness and dry wit make her a memorable part of the Katsuki family dynamic.
