TV-Series
Description
Johnny Gill is a former scientist of the Black Order who becomes a steadfast companion to Allen Walker. Standing at 165 centimeters tall, this American-born member of the Order is twenty-five years old and recognizable by his large, thick-lensed glasses. He often wears a shirt featuring a black skull design and is sometimes seen with headphones around his neck. As the story progresses, he begins tying his hair back in a small ponytail. His birthday is July second, and his blood type is A.
Coming from a family of tailors who were not particularly wealthy, Johnny learned sewing skills from his upbringing. He originally served in the Science Division of the North American Branch alongside his best friend Tup Dop before eventually transferring to the European Branch as a scientist. During his time at the North American Branch, he developed a close friendship with the exorcist Suman Dark, whose room was near his. The two frequently played chess together, with Johnny winning most of the games, though Suman would often ignore him in the cafeteria after a loss only to request a rematch upon returning from missions.
Johnny is a friendly and amiable individual who gets along with many people beyond his own department. However, he is physically among the weakest members of the Science Division, prone to fainting from low blood pressure. His poor health once required him to be taken to the Medical Division regularly, a task initially handled by Tup Dop and later by Tup's sister, Cash Dop. His constitution is such that he has been known to collapse with high fevers about once a month, and he was visibly sickened by the disturbing revelation of what happened to Yu Kanda and Alma Karma. Despite his physical shortcomings, Johnny possesses notable sewing abilities and a deep sense of loyalty.
Perhaps the most defining aspect of Johnny's personality is his unwavering support for Allen Walker. Even when the rest of the Black Order harbored suspicion and hatred toward Allen, accusing him of being a traitor working with the Noah family, Johnny remained steadfastly on Allen's side. He constantly defended his friend whenever he heard rumors circulating to Allen's disfavor. This loyalty was born from a significant event when Allen was badly injured while protecting Johnny during an attack on the European Branch Headquarters. Moved by this sacrifice, Johnny dedicated himself to becoming stronger so that he could one day support Allen in return when needed.
Johnny's role in the story shifts from that of a background scientist to an active participant in Allen's journey. He is present during the invasion of the Black Order headquarters, where he is impaled through the chest by the Noah Lulu Bell and later attacked by an Akuma, only to be saved by Allen. Following the events surrounding the awakening of Alma Karma, during which Allen escapes from the Order and is branded a traitor, Johnny makes a life-changing decision. Three months after Allen's departure, he has begun working out daily to improve his physical condition, showing visible progress in his health. He attempts to access Allen's case file in the off-limits records section with the intention of resigning from the Order to go after his friend. When confronted by his former chief Reever Wenham, Johnny claims he needs to return home because his elderly grandmother is in ill health and he is the only family member left to carry on the family name. Reever initially refuses the resignation to protect Johnny from punishment, but eventually relents, understanding Johnny's true reasons for leaving.
As Johnny heads to the train station, he is intercepted by two Central agents who attempt to force him to drink a serum that would erase his memories of the Order. Recognizing that this would make him forget his mission to find and help Allen, Johnny tries to escape using smoke bombs, but is quickly captured. He is saved by the unexpected arrival of Yu Kanda, who announces his intention to help Johnny find Allen. The two travel together, searching for leads by investigating debt collectors and the locations frequented by Allen's mentor, Cross Marian, operating under the logic that Allen would seek out Cross's connections. When Kanda asks why Johnny is so determined to find Allen, Johnny simply answers that it is because he and Allen are friends.
Throughout his development, Johnny transforms from a physically weak, comic relief scientist into a character driven by genuine loyalty and courage. His motivation is rooted in friendship and a desire to repay the debt he owes Allen for saving his life. He has a personal golem, a small brown creature with oval wings and a round, fluffy body with a single eye in the middle. While Johnny has no combat abilities as a scientist, his true strengths lie in his investigative skills, his sewing talent, and most importantly his unshakeable devotion to those he cares about. His relationship with Kanda develops significantly as the two work together, with Kanda seemingly seeing parallels between Johnny's quest to find Allen and his own history with Alma. Ultimately, Johnny's efforts are rewarded when he finally reunites with Allen Walker.
