Description
Chii, also known by his inmate number 71, is a character from the anime Nanbaka. He is a young Chinese man of 25 years old, though his unkempt stubble, tired expression, and messy gray hair often lead others to mistake him for being much older. He stands at an average height of 192 centimeters with a lean build, and his purple eyes are typically hidden behind a pair of round sunglasses. His standard attire is the purple inmate jumpsuit, which he wears with the sleeves and legs rolled up, and his identification badge is pinned to his chest.

Chii's most defining personality trait is his profound laziness, to the point of frivolity. He is frequently introduced napping and is quick to feign illness or exhaustion to avoid work or physical training. This behavior has earned him the consistent scorn of his more disciplined cellmates, who often refer to him as scum or trash, insults that have negatively impacted his self-esteem. Despite his slothful exterior, Chii possesses a warm heart and a deep sense of compassion. He genuinely cares for his cellmates and values his place within their group, wishing to start over with them. This caring nature is complemented by a cunning and resourceful mind, as he is capable of pretending to betray his friends in a calculated effort to protect them from a greater threat.

Chii's past is rooted in his expertise as a pharmaceutical chemist and herbalist who ran his own business in China. Plagued by debt, his shop was eventually approached by the Chinese Mafia, and he was brought before the boss, Hachiman. Recognizing Chii's valuable skills, Hachiman offered to pay off his debts in exchange for his services as a chemist. With no other options, Chii accepted and began producing medicines for the organization. It was during this time that he became acquainted with his future cellmates, Liang and Upa. Chii discovered that Upa had been kidnapped by the mafia and was slowly dying after having his organs harvested for sale. In a profound act of selflessness, Chii personally donated his own organs to save Upa's life.

The final break with Hachiman occurred when he ordered Chii to create a deadly poison. Chii refused, only to learn that Hachiman had secretly been modifying his medicines into fatal poisons and selling them. When Chii destroyed a sample in anger, Hachiman showed him the brutalized body of Liang as a warning, revealing his intent to kill Liang for failing to assassinate his targets. Horrified by these events, Chii orchestrated the betrayal and disbandment of the mafia to save Liang, an act that led to his own arrest and eventual transfer to Nanba Prison.

In the story, Chii is a supporting character and a member of Cell 8 in Building 5 of Nanba Prison. His primary role often involves leveraging his unique abilities during critical moments, particularly those that involve his traumatic past with Hachiman. His key relationships are with his cellmates, Liang and Upa. Despite their constant mockery of his laziness, the three share a deep, complicated bond forged through their shared history in the mafia and Chii's life-saving sacrifice for Upa. He also shares a camaraderie with fellow inmate Inori Hakkai, bonding over their similarly slothful lifestyles and a mutual fondness for mahjong. In contrast, his former boss Hachiman remains a source of fear and deep resentment, a complicated antagonist whom Chii ultimately confronts.

Chii's most notable ability is his genius-level expertise in pharmacology and botany. He has a profound knowledge of plants and can expertly create powerful medicines, deadly poisons, and sedatives from nearly any natural source. While he lacks physical strength and avoids combat, his intelligence and chemical ingenuity make him invaluable in situations requiring non-physical solutions, such as creating an antidote, a paralysis poison to subdue a powerful enemy, or a sedative to calm a berserk ally. His talents in this area are precisely what made him a target for the mafia and the reason for his imprisonment at Nanba, which houses him specifically for his skill in creating poisons.

Throughout his time in the story, Chii shows development by moving from a purely passive, cowardly figure who goes along with evil to survive, to someone who actively takes a stand. He overcomes his fear of Hachiman to directly confront him, ultimately playing a crucial role in his defeat. He also begins to show subtle growth in his self-worth, as seen when he is moved to tears after being treated with basic kindness by another character, something he was unaccustomed to. His petty hobbies include developing new medicines, researching plants, playing Mahjong, and he has a unique fondness for mayonnaise and sweet and sour pork. He also has a known phobia of dogs, stemming from a past trauma.
