Description
Alfreed, also known as Alfarīd, is the daughter of Haltash, the late chieftain of the nomadic Zott Clan, and the sister of Merlain. Following her father's death, she became the chieftess of her tribe. Alfreed has a striking appearance, characterized by her short red hair and matching red eyes, as well as the two distinctive red markings on her cheeks that are traditional for members of the Zott Tribe. Her typical attire consists of a blue headscarf, a salmon-colored shirt beneath an orange cape, and metal armor that protects her left shoulder and arm. In earlier adaptations of the story, she was depicted with long, light red hair instead of short.
Alfreed possesses a headstrong and tomboyish personality, speaking with a rough and direct tongue that often masks more considerate intentions. She is known for being quick to anger and, at times, displaying a childish demeanor. Fearless to the point of overestimating her own abilities, she once confronted the warrior Hilmes in a bid for revenge, despite being severely outmatched. Alfreed values hard labor and is always willing to assist others, prioritizing immediate, practical needs over abstract political debates. Her upbringing in the man's world of the Zott bandits gives her an earthy and pragmatic atmosphere, distinguishing her from the more urbane members of Prince Arslan's entourage.
Alfreed's primary motivation becomes clear after her clan is brutally attacked by the warrior known as Silvermask, who is actually Hilmes. Hilmes kills her father and most of her companions. She first appears while trying to avenge her father by killing Hilmes, but the fight is interrupted by the strategist Narsus, who saves her life and helps her escape. Deeply grateful and charmed by her savior, Alfreed's profound loyalty to him becomes the driving force of her actions. She consequently joins Prince Arslan's camp, persistently declaring herself to be Narsus's wife or lover despite his repeated rejections and protests. Her hatred for Hilmes, due to his role in her father's murder, remains a powerful and enduring motivation throughout the story.
In the narrative, Alfreed becomes a member of Prince Arslan's group, serving as a messenger, doing errands, and fighting alongside the others. Her role is often tied to her fixation on Narsus, but she gradually becomes more invested in the prince's quest to reclaim the kingdom of Pars. Her most significant relationships are marked by her attachment to Narsus, which leads to frequent clashes with his young attendant, Elam. She and Elam engage in childish arguments, largely due to her casual and possessive attitude toward Narsus, though they are capable of collaborating on missions when necessary. Conversely, Alfreed forms a more amicable bond with the priestess Farangis, whom she respects as a confidante. She discusses her relationship with Narsus with Farangis and occasionally expresses envy toward Farangis's more well-endowed figure, though she does not see her as a romantic rival.
Over the course of her journey, Alfreed experiences some development. Although she initially dismisses Prince Arslan and only follows him for Narsus's sake, she gradually acknowledges the young prince's potential to bring about significant change and comes to genuinely support his cause. Her background as a member of the Zott Clan deeply influences her worldview, emphasizing practicality, tribal loyalty, and a sense of justice, as the Zott Tribe reportedly never steals from the sick or the dead.
In terms of abilities, Alfreed is a capable and skilled warrior, which is a point of pride for her as a member of the Zott people. She excels in horsemanship, archery, and swordsmanship, typically wielding a light bow and a wave sword in battle.
