Description
King Delzaine is the reigning monarch of the subterranean world of Endora. He is a figure of significant power and authority, whose complex past and hidden motivations drive much of the central conflict in the story. As the king, his primary objective is to revive the Babel, a massive contraption that once served as a gateway between Endora and the surface world. While this goal is initially presented as the ambition of a tyrannical ruler, its true purpose is deeply personal.

Outwardly perceived as a cold and calculating antagonist, Delzaine is rumored to have murdered his own brother, King Alzerm, to usurp the throne. This act of alleged fratricide is the source of his nephew, Prince Emilio Langheim, burning desire for revenge. Emilio, who once idolized Delzaine as a father figure, now despises him and dedicates his life to vengeance. However, the truth of the past is more nuanced. Delzaine did not kill his brother; the murder was committed by a scientist from the surface named Kazunobu Asanaga, who then returned to his own world with Delzaines infant son.

The fate of this son is the key to understanding Delzaines character. His biological child, Shun, was born with a terminal illness. In a desperate attempt to save his son's life, Delzaine entrusted the child to Asanaga, believing modern medicine on the surface could heal him. Asanaga, however, never intended to return the boy, raising Shun as his own son to replace a stillborn child. Consequently, Delzaines quest to activate the Babel was never about conquest or power; it was a father's desperate attempt to create a path to the surface to be reunited with the son who had been stolen from him.

Throughout the narrative, Delzaine serves as the primary target of Emilios wrath and a formidable obstacle for the protagonists. He commands a group of elite agents known as the Truculent, who are tasked with eliminating threats to his rule, such as the revolutionary army called the Ignauts. Despite his position as the target of a revenge quest, Delzaine is not a one-dimensional villain. He is portrayed as a man who is deeply aware of the consequences of his actions and the futility of Emilios single-minded pursuit of revenge, often questioning what the prince plans to do after the king is dead.

Delzaines most significant relationships are familial. He is the adoptive father of Emilio, a bond that turns to bitterness and hatred after the presumed murder of Emilios father. He is also the biological father of Shun, a truth unknown to both young men for most of their lives, making them cousins as well as companions. His relationship with the scientist Asanaga is one of deep betrayal, as the man he trusted to save his child instead became his greatest enemy. As a king and a warrior, Delzaine is a formidable combatant capable of summoning a powerful Warp Relic, a weapon generated from energy particles unique to Endora.

Delzaines development culminates in a tragic and redemptive sacrifice. He does not die at Emilios hand as the prince had always planned. Instead, he is mortally wounded while shielding Emilio and Shun from a more malicious and irredeemable enemy. In his final moments, he lays eyes on his son for the first time since Shun was a sickly infant, seeing him healthy and grown, which brings him a fleeting sense of peace. His death does not bring Emilio the satisfaction he expected, but rather profound regret, as the young prince realizes the man he hated was a complex figure whose motivations were not purely evil, and with whom reconciliation is now impossible. The power vacuum left by his demise also plunges the kingdom into chaos, proving that his rule, however stern, was a force of stability in Endora.
