Description
Maimai is a seventeen-year-old high school girl who becomes a participant in a mysterious group tour to a remote, hidden village. Her decision to join this journey stems from a painful experience of social isolation; she was ostracized by her friends after developing romantic feelings for the same person as one of them. The specific circumstances of her heartbreak involve the boy she liked, who cruelly mocked her behind her back, leading to her feeling alienated.

Initially, Maimai's behavior towards another tour participant, Mitsumune, is marked by teasing and irritation. This is because she perceives a strong resemblance between Mitsumune and the boy who had rejected her, and she displaces her unresolved frustration onto him. However, as the story progresses and the group faces the village's strange and dangerous phenomena, her attitude softens significantly. She begins to show genuine concern for Mitsumune, and their relationship evolves from one of antagonism to a more caring and protective bond.

Maimai's role in the narrative is often that of a stabilizing and empathetic presence. While the group's fear and paranoia frequently lead to irrational mob mentality and violent accusations, Maimai consistently demonstrates a level-headed and humane perspective. For instance, when another member named Jack is accused of wrongdoing and the mob calls for his execution, Maimai actively pleads for mercy and for a non-violent resolution. Her sanity and refusal to give in to the group's collective hysteria are noted by others, highlighting her role as one of the more rational and composed characters amidst the chaos.

A key relationship that defines Maimai is her past connection to Jack. It is revealed that they attended the same elementary school together. Maimai carries a deep sense of guilt and responsibility regarding him, as she inadvertently revealed a secret from his past, which led to his own suffering. This backstory adds depth to her character, explaining her protective stance towards him during the conflicts in the village.

Regarding the supernatural elements of the village, which manifest the deepest psychological wounds or traumas of the inhabitants—known as Nanaki—Maimai appears to be less affected than many others. During an exploration of a tunnel, she briefly panics after witnessing a large, ominous shadow that resembles Mitsumune, suggesting this might be a manifestation of her own unresolved feelings and trauma. However, she does not succumb to the lethargy and loss of self that plagues many of the other characters. This resilience is attributed to the fact that her central emotional trauma, the social rejection by her friends, had already begun to diminish in intensity before her arrival in the village, making her less vulnerable to its effects. Her primary motivation throughout the series is navigating her interpersonal guilt and romantic disappointments, ultimately seeking a way to come to terms with her past rather than being consumed by it.
