Description
Mitsumune is a sixteen-year-old high school student and one of the main protagonists of the series. He is academically gifted and possesses an easily trusting nature, but he has a tendency to voice whatever crosses his mind without filtering his thoughts. His background is defined by a deep family tragedy: he had a twin brother named Tokimune who died in an accident. After that loss, his mother refused to accept Tokimune’s death and began treating Mitsumune as a replacement for his brother, forcing him to live under Tokimune’s name and identity for most of his remembered life. This upbringing left him with a fractured sense of self and a persistent struggle to understand who he really is. His motivation for joining the bus tour to the mysterious Nanaki Village is to escape his overbearing mother and find a place where he can start over. In the story, Mitsumune serves as a central figure whose emotional journey mirrors the series’ theme of confronting one’s past. He is often perceived as weak and gullible by other members of the group, making him a target of suspicion and intimidation. Despite this, he maintains a desire to help others and acts on a strong sense of justice. His key relationships include a protective yet controlling bond with his childhood friend Hayato, who views Mitsumune as someone to manage rather than an equal, and a trusting, supportive connection with the enigmatic girl Masaki, whom he defends when the rest of the group turns against her. Over the course of the narrative, Mitsumune is forced to face the physical manifestation of his trauma—a giant creature representing his deceased brother—and through this confrontation he begins to accept his own identity instead of living as Tokimune’s shadow. He ultimately chooses to leave the village with a clearer sense of self. Notable traits include his academic excellence, his honesty, and his tendency to blurt out his thoughts, but he possesses no supernatural abilities. His development is centered on reclaiming his name and learning to stand on his own.
