Description
Coach Kakuta is a male teacher at the high school attended by the titular character Sakamoto. He is introduced as the faculty member in charge of student discipline, and he also serves as the health and physical education instructor. Students often refer to him with the nickname Kaku-sen. Kakuta possesses a robust and sturdy physique with dark, tanned skin, and his most distinctive feature is his perfectly maintained crew cut haircut, which is cut so squarely and neatly that Sakamoto once used it as a substitute for a ruler.
Kakuta's primary role in the story is that of a disciplinarian who views Sakamoto as a personal adversary. His antagonism stems from Sakamoto's habit of arriving at the school gate at the very last possible second each morning without being late. This infuriates Kakuta, who waits by the gate daily in an attempt to catch Sakamoto slipping and to find a reason to scold him. His motivation is rooted in a desire to find a flaw in Sakamoto's seemingly perfect behavior and to finally knock him down a peg. Despite his self-appointed mission to discipline Sakamoto, the more he tries to treat the student as an enemy, the more he finds himself reluctantly impressed by Sakamoto's flawless conduct, broad-mindedness, and immense charisma.
Throughout his appearances, Kakuta's personality is defined by his hot-tempered and stern demeanor, which contrasts sharply with Sakamoto's unflappable coolness. He is an adult authority figure who is unusually fixated on a single student, driven by a mix of frustration and grudging respect. While his antagonism is genuine, he is not a villainous character; his reactions are often played for comedic effect, and he is ultimately won over by Sakamoto's abilities, even if he continues to find Sakamoto annoying. A minor but curious detail about his background is that, according to another character named Morita, Kakuta apparently has a twin brother. One notable ability attributed to Kakuta, aside from his physical fitness, is the practical utility of his head, as the straight edge of his perfectly aligned crew cut can be used as a measuring tool.
